I hunger, you hunger, we all hunger for hot snacks. From Sydney’s La Salut to Adelaide’s La Buvette, we show you where to go.

Anyone who’s been out drinking in the city knows the life-affirming importance of a good meal or hot snack, whether that be a crispy croquette with a cheesy heart of gold or a flame-fired take on Japanese street food. It’s one thing to know where to find a great line-up of craft beers or a cosy bar that’s worth the wait, but it’s quite another to have a mental roll-call of bars and pubs that’ll take you from hungry to fed with nary a limp pizza slice or disappointing sushi roll in sight.

That’s where we can help. Our hearts beat in time with hot snacks. We hear the rumble of your stomach and respond with our own’s growling insistence to be sated with salty morsels made for sharing and substantial mains that sustain us. From Perth to Tasmania, we’ve rounded up the most delicious and decadent bar snacks and hot meals available around the country. Pull up a pew at one of these venues and you’ll be rewarded with top-notch food as well as brilliant bevvies.

French onion soup at Adelaide's La Buvette

First stop, La Buvette in South Australia. It feels like backstreet Paris but it’s laneway Adelaide. On the menu, you’ll find traditional French onion soup complete with Gruyère croutons. Really, this is the savoury version of crème brûlée with its cheesy bread crust. Other highlights include a pan-seared porterhouse steak with red wine Bordelaise sauce and hand-cut frites, and a degustation board filled with four kinds of cheese and charcuteries.

Liberté in Albany, WA, serves tasty drinks and inventive Vietnamese food. The loaded fries with smoked brisket are what dreams are made of and the garlic, chilli and crab noodles will hit the spot every time. Further north in Perth, Bar Rogue is renowned for keeping it snacky with grilled cheese rotis and Bangkok-style grilled pork skewers.

In Melbourne, for a smart bridging snack that will take you from drinks to dinner, Gimlet will whirl you away with a perfect Martini and a plate of rock oysters served with rye bread and seaweed butter. After a more casual bite? Zsa’s in Northcote is an all-day eatery serving quality nibbles and mains that range from artichoke rosti to gnocchi with gorgonzola and quince.

Dabble in the snack menu at Bar Liberty in Melbourne’s Fitzroy and you’ll find fried cauliflower with nutmeg salt. Yakimono in the city specialises in JFC – AKA Japanese food over fire. Think spicy barbecued baby-back ribs, curried sweet potato gyoza, and a whole lot of beer on tap.

A dish at Redfern's La Salut in Sydney

As for hangry Sydneysiders, they can experience the full breadth of Spanish wine and snacks at La Salut in Redfern. Don’t leave without trying the pork belly and kimchi croquettes.

Finally, in Canberra, Bar Rochford is bringing the mouthwatering action to ACT with fabulously retro lobster vol-au-vents, anchovy toasts, and Berkshire pork chops with gochujang caramel.

Wherever it is you decide to settle, just make sure you go with an open mind and an empty stomach.
