Five of the new wines in the Penfolds Collection 2025

Call your mates, pool your cash, because the new Penfolds wines are here.

Your birthday, New Year’s Eve, the Penfolds Collection release – these are what we consider major moments on the annual calendar. Plenty of wineries release their new wines in one annual drop, but few spark as much buzz as the Penfolds Collection. It’s a Big Deal. As in, Christmas for wine people – except in August (and with fewer paper crowns). That most famous red, Penfolds Grange, always headlines the collection, but there are 18 other wines in this range that also deserve some of the fanfare. They don’t all come with Grange’s price tag, either. And these wines are now officially available in stores.

If you’re feeling spendy, there are several exceptional wines in the 2025 Collection that might just inspire you to push the boat out. If, however, your budget sits somewhere else on the scale, there are 10 new-vintage wines that come in under $100 at Dan’s, and four that are less than $50. Not bad for what’s arguably Australia’s most iconic winery. If you’re not familiar with Penfolds, this South Australian icon produces our most globally renowned wines, are a whopping 181 years old and have been making that pinnacle wine Grange since 1951. Every single year.

More recently, the Penfolds team has been innovating with wines made from key international regions, including multi-nation blends never seen before, and others made wholly with fruit from France, the US and even China. This year, the spanking new all-French FWT 543 joins the mix, with its multi-region blend of cabernet and syrah. Always full of benchmark reds and whites, the 2025 collection is again chocked with highlights. These include the Bin 311 Chardonnay – made with fruit from a trifecta of top cool-climate regions – the ripe and robust Bin 21 Grenache, the always understated St Henri Shiraz and the Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon, which blends the best fruit from five regions across South Australia.

If you’re wondering which wines to focus on within the range, we have five other must-try releases that demand your attention. We think they make a great excuse to fire up your wine-loving mates, maybe even pool your resources and plan an elaborate dinner to go with some of these special wines.

1. Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2023

One of the most collected wines in the range, the Penfolds Bin 389 blends cabernet (51%) for structure and depth, while shiraz (49%) adds weight and warmth. Made from fruit grown across McLaren Vale, Padthaway and the Barossa Valley, the result is a rich, full-bodied and vibrant wine, with red fruit and tart cranberry flavours balanced by sweet vanilla and savoury notes. This wine – AKA Baby Grange – is well-loved for good reason, and the new vintage strikes a balance of power and elegance at the same time.

2. Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

If complex, savoury red wines are your jam, then this super premium cabernet will tick all the boxes. A combination of fruit from McLaren Vale, Padthaway and the Barossa Valley, you can expect to find flavours that span everything from black olive and bay leaf to dark chocolate and earthy notes in here. It all creates a layered and intense wine, with smooth, fine-grained tannins to finish. This is no everyday quaffer (well, you do you), but it’s a complete wine experience.

3. Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2023

Some of the most surprising and crowd-pleasing wines in the Penfolds Collection land at the lower end of the prices in the pack, and this over-achieving shiraz is an excellent case in point. Blue fruit flavours mix with a savoury depth – think olives and umami – and powdery tannins and minerality come together to complete the whole package. Velvety and plush, this is a wine that pulls off a whole lot more than you might expect.

4. Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2023

If you only associate Penfolds with red wines, it’s time to meet the bright yet complex Yattarna Chardonnay. This cool-climate standout, made with premium fruit from the Adelaide Hills, Tasmania and Tumbarumba, has a beaming core of acidity and a chalky texture – in the best way – which bring the wine together. This is structured and classy, and well worth getting a few chardy-loving mates over so you can all savour this wine together.

5. Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2021

The big daddy of the collection – and one of the world’s most famous wines – this year’s Grange is made from almost all shiraz, but with a touch of cabernet (6%) in there, too. Always super complex, Grange is famous for its layers of flavour and texture, with the wine often only at its best with a few lazy decades of age on it. The 2021 is an excellent example of all these things (with at least one 100-point score under its belt already). The very best fruit from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley showcase dark fruit flavours, licorice, peppercorn and a suite of savoury notes. There’s a whole lot to discover – and enjoy – in here.
