What is Stout Beer?

You must have heard a lot about stouts at bars, parties, or by beer aficionados and have a general idea of what to expect, but let’s give you a clear picture of what stouts are exactly. Stouts are a dark, rich flavourful beer that originated in London way back in the 18th century. Taste notes of this beer include flavours like coffee, chocolate, caramel and roasted malt, with a creamy texture that is mildly bitter and ranges from sweet to dry depending on the brand you pick. It’s a beer that has a striking appearance and resonates with tradition and innovation alike, creating a sensory sipping experience that you will thoroughly enjoy.

Typically, stout beers have an ABV between 4% and 8%. However, it’s important to know that stronger variants of stout are available in the market with an ABV of 10% or more. A testament to craftsmanship and beer that has touched the lives of so many at bars after days of work and in days of joy and sorrow, stout beer is an iconic beverage that will keep you captivated whenever you take a sip of it.

Types of Stout Beer

Stout beer comes in a delightful array of different flavours, each offering a unique taste experience. Let’s not delay and get right into the diverse world of stout beer types:

Irish Stout - A classic stout that originated in Ireland, Irish stouts boast a roasted coffee and chocolate flavour that is relatively light and easy to sip in lager-like quantities.

Milk Stout - If you’re looking for that creamy punch with a dash of sweetness, milk stout is for you. Don’t miss out on sipping milk stout as it’s a popular option that has everything you want in a beer.

Oatmeal Stout - Brewed with oats to enhance the beer’s texture, oatmeal beer offers a rich, sweet flavour with each sip. It's a comforting beer to enjoy on any occasion.

Imperial Stout - A stout with a higher alcohol content this one has an ABV ranging above 10% at times. It's a beer with a rich flavour profile and perfect for folks who love full-bodied beers. The perfect beer to sip in a bar with your mates.

American Stout - This stout has a robust malt character and has an assertive hop bitterness. It’s a versatile option for casual occasions and even works well on those formal gatherings. Good food is a must to have by the side when sipping this beer.

These are the major stouts available in the market. You just have to opt for a type that suits your taste and enjoy the sipping experience whenever you're in the mood for a good, classy beer.

How are Stouts Made?

Stouts are produced by brewing a mix of water, malted barley, hops, yeast and dark roasted malts to give it that deep colour. The brewing process starts off by mashing grains where the grains are mixed with hot water to extract fermentable sugar. Boiling occurs next, and hops are added for flavour and bitterness. After coming to a boil, the wort is cooled and then put in a fermentation vessel to ferment the sugars into carbon dioxide and alcohol. Yeast is then added. After that, the beer is allowed to mature in flavour before it is packed and marketed.
