The friendliest of neighbourhood wine bars, Famelia trades in good times, approachable and intriguing wines, and sublime snacks, making it an instant hit on vibrant Enmore Road.

Why you goIt might seem like a cliché, but Famelia is exactly what the name sounds like: family. Welcoming, comfortable and inclusive, it’s like a warm hug from your best friend – the kind of place that fills your cup (yes, literally) without pretentiousness. You get the gist. Set in a shopfront on vibrant Enmore Road, little Famelia is a wine-inspired haven from the hubbub of the street outside. Settle in for snacks, wine and conversation, and to see where it all takes you.

Why you stayOn any given day the spirited atmosphere in this part of Newtown is infectious, and it transitions seamlessly (turned down a notch or two) into the calm oak and exposed-brickwork interior of Famelia. This is the place for a casual Sunday afternoon glass of vino, or a relaxed yet sophisticated Friday night get-together with your closest mates. If you’re keen to learn about wine, you’ll be happily given a crash course by some of the best in the business. Or if you’ve decided to take a more relaxed approach, use your time at Famelia as a springboard to dinner, or cosy up and order a bunch of share plates.
What drink to order

Famelia is all about the wine, and proprietor, namesake and seasoned sommelier Amelia Birch and her team are on hand to recommend something to suit any palate. The beauty of the constantly evolving wine list, with bottles adorning the walls, is that you’re not limited to textbook rosé, pinot grigio or shiraz. Nor are you faced with a load of wild natural wine. The offering here is a considered spectrum of artisanal vino that sits midway between approachably delicious and intriguingly complex, so rest assured that regardless of what you choose, there’ll be something excellent poured into your glass. What’s more, each week Amelia chooses a winemaker – Australian or international – to champion in a “wine takeover”, and these drops are available either in a flight or by the glass. Her knowledge of wine is profound, and you’ll hear the stories behind the producer and the bottles you’re drinking. Seriously, if only all education could be this much fun.

Of course, if wine doesn’t happen to be your thing (warning: the staff may change your mind), don’t fret – there’s a smart choice of cocktails (a citrusy Yuzushu Spritz, anyone?) and craft beers, too.

What to pair it withAny wine-lover worth their salty snacks will relish the selection of grazing plates, which cover the important wine-friendly groups of cheese, cured meats and fancy dippy-type things. Get stuck into a great glass of chardonnay paired with pita to dunk in whipped cod roe with tomato and white anchovies, and you’ll be smiling for days. A tart Milawa blue cheese with truffled honey will be best friends with a South Australian dessert wine, while shredded pork rillettes goes beautifully with a skin-contact white, as does kangaroo salami with a nice grenache.
Why we love itThough relatively new, Famelia already feels like a mainstay of the Enmore strip. There’s something charming about the place, a model for all neighbourhood wine bars – it’s inviting, has delicious drinks and food, and a welcoming atmosphere. This is a place that suits all comers, no matter your level of interest in wine (though you might just leave having learned a thing or two anyway).

Who to takeFamelia is one of those wonderful all-rounder places where you’ll be hard-pressed to find an occasion it’s not suited for. Date night? Naturally. Levelling up your after-work drinks? Go for it. Casual afternoon glass of wine paired with a good book? Hey, we’re only human. Whoever you decide to take, there’s a high chance of good times.
