The 2024 results came in overnight. Find out where our top Aussie venues placed.

Last year it was the Spanish bar Sips, known for their outlandish vessels and complex cocktails, that collected the top gong at the coveted World’s 50 Best Bars. The year before, Barcelona’s vibey Paradiso took it home (Spain is clearly doing something right). For 2024, it’s the formidable Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City that landed the number one spot in the just-announced awards. Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Bar Leone made a record-breakingly high debut on the list at number two, just shortly after celebrating their first birthday.
While Australia didn’t quite edge into the top 10, we got pretty damn close – with Melbourne’s teeny-but-mighty Caretaker’s Cottage placing at 21 on the list, jumping up from 23 last year. The team – helmed by Rob Libecans, Ryan Noreiks and our Matt Stirling (pictured L-R) – also won the Michter’s Art of Hospitality award – a title that’s given not just for good hospitality, but above-and-beyond hospitality. Like, plan-your-next-visit kind of service. Also taking into account their unpretentious but considered cocktail menu, Caretaker’s Cottage was the clear frontrunner. If you've spent any time in their incredibly capable hands, none of this will come as any surprise. It's a forever favourite of ours any night of the week AND, fun fact, Matt Stirling creates most of the cocktail recipes for Dan's Daily. That's why they're so damn good. Keeping the honour roll going, they also won Best Bar in Australasia. Very bloody deserved.

But wait there’s more – Sydney’s fabulous Maybe Sammy (pictured) made its sixth appearance on the list, coming in at 26. A fantastic achievement for the group, and for Aussie bars. Bubble-gun cocktails all around!

Melbourne’s Byrdi bar – known for its ferments, seasonal drinks, highballs and bangin’ food menu – jumped up from 61 in 2023 to a massive 35 this year. And lastly, another iconic and beloved Aussie bar, Melbourne’s Above Board pipped in at 100.

Cocktail creatives, bartender gurus and all-round industry legends descended on Madrid this year for the annual reveal, with more than 1000 folk attending the finalist's gala.

To make the hard decisions, 700 drink pros – famous bartenders, consultants, writers, and cocktail experts from all over the globe – pick their top eight bars based on their fave experiences over the past year and a half. That means best hospitality, service, overall experience, and, of course, the booze. A hard feat!

Congratulations to all our wonderful Aussie bars, what a year!
