New flavour alert: Meet the whiskeys making slow sipping less intimidating.

Maybe it’s just the Don Draper-ification of it all, but there’s something about being able to truly enjoy whisky that feels like a cultural level-up. Slow sipping requires taste, pace, nuance and a certain savoir-faire. And while the old-world aesthetic of drinking whisky (or whiskey), especially neat or on the rocks, is wildly alluring (and quite chic in a candid, ‘nonchalant’ Instagram-story kind-of-way), it’s a bold jump from the Aperol Spritzes and Tommy Margs of a typical night out.

For the whisky-curious who prefer small steps to bold jumps, our favourite brands have been turning out a heap of new releases making whisky appreciation more accessible. There’s a slew of fruity infusions and natural flavour additions that soften the spirit and help newer sippers’ tastebuds to appreciate the toasted caramel notes and other characters of good whisky (and while we’re here, rum too). You’ve got to start somewhere, right? Make it one of these.

The new Jim Beam Pineapple is a fruity twist on the classic bourbon

1. Jim Beam Pineapple

Have you ever roasted pineapple? With a little brown sugar, potentially even some cinnamon or five spice? It’s a ridiculously easy, spectacularly delicious way to save a mediocre end-of-season pineapple, and it delivers rich, caramelised flavours not far from this new liqueur-infused bourbon. Jim Bean’s classic Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey delivers on notes of vanilla, caramel and oak, which mellows out the tropical tartness of the pineapple addition. It’s pretty bloody delish with a simple soda top-up, or if you’re pine-inclined, a glug of pineapple juice.
$55.99 each

2. Proper No. Twelve Apple Blended Irish Whiskey

When it comes to Irish whiskey, MMA champ Conor McGregor is a lover, not a fighter – and his apple-flavoured iteration proves it. With tasting notes of crisp Granny Smith apple, sweet vanilla, browned butter and light spices, it goes down like an apple pie in liquid form. Cosy, warming, tart enough so it’s not cloying, and exactly what you want to sip as the weather starts to cool. Don’t even get us started on the Hot Toddy potential of this syrupy spirit.

3. Crown Royal Blackberry Canadian Whisky

If your fruit preferences lean more to the dark (berry) side, Crown Royal’s blackberry flavoured whiskey makes for an easy entry into the spirit. Reminiscent of nostalgic blackberry crumble flavours, the whiskey’s natural caramel-like biscuit notes ground the sweetness of the reduced dark berries, like a hot pie with the perfect base-to-filling ratio. It’s perfect for sipping on the rocks, but if you want to get really meta, try adding a tot into berry pie filling before baking for an elevated take on the trad dessert.
$64.99 each

4. Jim Beam Honey

So, you’ve navigated pineapple, and you’re ready for the next step – a squeeze of honey. With a more subtle flavour, honey acts as the perfect extension to JB’s OG vanilla, caramel and oak notes. Even the non-whiskey drinkers will find it goes down incredibly easily. This spirit is one to sip over ice, but it also acts as a superstar swap in any Whisky Highball of sorts. Ginger ale, apple juice, a splash of soda… it’s a novice cocktail maker’s dream.

5. Bundaberg Drop Bear Spicy Pineapple

Okay, so this final pick isn’t a whiskey – this is a rum-based spirit – but we think it fits perfectly among these new releases, not least because it offers another fresh new way to enjoy dark spirits. It also brings us full circle with another pineapple-spiked option, but this time with a kick. Inspired by the part-mythical, part-terrifying drop bears of Queensland’s tropical bush, this spicy whiskey is like hot honey in spirit-form – golden, sweet and with an ever-fearing and delayed chilli hit that gets you when you least expect it. Just like, well, a drop bear. Best served short, chilled and straight up, the fiery spirit is a conversation starter and friend-maker, making it the perfect bottle to take to a party with a largely unfamiliar guest list.
