From ‘quiet’ XPA to aged whisky, our office has all the best gift ideas.
Dads. Easy to poke fun at, hard to shop for. Maybe yours has a collection of Hawaiian shirts that evoke your deepest cringe response? Or perhaps his dad jokes are feeling a little tired? Maybe he’s a bit of a Facebook over-sharer? Whatever the case, we’ll bet the house that you still have no idea what to get him for Father’s Day (it’s the first Sunday of September, in case you were wondering). And look, even if he hasn’t told you what he wants (or needs), he still deserves the very best – he did raise you, after all.
To save you the inevitable hours wasted trying to figure out which golf clubs he’d appreciate or which sports autobiography he hasn’t read, we asked ten Dan’s Daily staffers what they’re getting their dad this Father’s Day. It’s kind of like insider trading for gifts. From Father’s Day classics like aged whisky to the hottest thing in low-alc beer, these gift ideas are guaranteed to knock his socks-you-gave-him-last-Christmas off.
From Holly to Mel: Don Julio Blanco Tequila
“My dad loves to make cocktails,” says Visual Merchandising Coordinator Holly. “Over the summer, he fell in love with tequila again. It takes him back to drinking the street tequila in Acapulco in the early 70s.” Okay, we get it: your dad’s cool.
This year, Holly’s shouting her (cool) dad, Mel, a bottle of Don Julio Blanco. This seriously good tequila is bottled un-aged for a crisp agave flavour perfect for Margaritas, Palomas and more. “You'll always catch him in a party shirt, ready to talk your ear off about his adventurous life,” says Holly. Nothing better to recall those Acapulco sunsets with!
From Lara to Pedro: Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache
“Dad’s my best mate,” says Dan’s Daily Editor in Chief, Lara. “We bond over a lot of things (cheese, Succession, our love for karaoke), but nothing brings us together like good wine,” she says. “I swear we could talk about (and taste) wine for days! He’s a big shiraz guy but also loves to try new things and push his palate.” Grown on some of the oldest Grenache vines in the world, the Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache is a real conversation starter.
“This Barossa grenache is bang on,” says Lara. “He's an epic cook (Dad's house is my favourite Mexican restaurant, for sure) so I'm sure he'll slow cook something delicious for a billion years to have with the wine. Here's hoping he shares both the food and the wine with me.”
From Rohan to Ron: Zacapa Centenario 23 Solera Gran Reserva Rum
Rohan’s dad Ron is something of a domestic mixologist in the making. "Dad loves hosting friends and family. When he bought his new apartment some time ago, the first thing he did was build a custom home bar in the dining room,” says the Dan Murphy’s Web Developer. “Stocking his bar was a multi-year affair, with the whole family bringing back unique duty-free liquors from their travels.”
So what do you get the man with a home bar as worldly as Ron’s? “His go-to drink has always been a whisky and tonic, but recently he's taken a liking to tequilas, rums and gins,” says Rohan. Enter Zacapa Centenario 23 Solera Gran Reserva Rum (if you think the name is mouthful, wait until you taste it!). This ultra-boujee Guatemalan spirit sees top notch rums between 6 and 23 years old blended, then fractionally matured for 11 years in a series of oak barrels (AKA the Solera method). With its deep, complex flavour, it sounds right at home in Ron’s bar if you ask us.
From Molly to Justin: The Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14-year-old Single Malt Whisky
Some dads will drink any old thing while they watch the footy. Not Molly’s dad, Justin. “There's nothing he loves more than having a glass of whisky while watching his beloved Collingwood Magpies,” says Molly. This Father's Day, she’s gifting him The Balvenie Scotch Whisky. “Dad has the best tool shed in town and has been called in for multiple (unpaid) handyman jobs over the years,” says Molly, “so this will hopefully serve as a good thank you!”
Developed by legendary Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE, this Speyside single malt is aged 14 years in traditional oak barrels before a final soak in Caribbean rum casks before bottling.
“He loves single malt whisky with a hint of sweet, fruity flavours,” says Molly. This one will surely hit the mark – even when the ‘Pies don’t.
From Paul to Bruce: d'Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz and d'Arry's Original Gift Pack
“I was brought up to believe that the height of social and sporting success was catching the cork that Dad fired deep onto the back lawn from a bottle of bubbles,” says Creative Manager Paul Thomson. “Now no one I know has a backyard, and when I shoot alcohol at children, I’m ‘a pest’ and ‘ruining this baby shower’.”
“The toast at my old man’s wedding was a big glass of d’Arenberg red. I know this because I was the best man,” says Paul. “Pretty sure it was Footbolt. Old school, but nothing up itself or super serious.” What better gift than a two-pack of the winery’s hallmark reds? “Cheers to Brucey, to the excitement of being sent to “see what’s in the cellar for later”, and cheers to big ole glasses of McLaren Vale red.”
From Lily to Al: Pirate Life Aussie Wheat Ale
Some dads are stubborn; stuck in their ways. Lily’s is the opposite. “Dad loves trying new things,” says the Digital Content Coordinator. “He’s got about a thousand hobbies under his belt at this stage – from surfing to pottery, to photography, to marathon running, to cycling, to travelling the world, the list goes on.” Okay. Chill, Al.
“What better present to give the man who tries everything than a brand new style of beer,” says Lily. “A six-pack of Pirate Life Aussie Wheat Ale from his West Coast Eagles-coloured fridge will absolutely put a smile on his face this Father’s Day.” Uniquely Australian, this brand new style of wheat ale is light, bright and ultra zesty, and Pirate Life’s is one of the best.
From Nisha to Richie: Hendricks Neptunia Gin
Nisha is a Delivery Lead at Dan Murphy’s and she is certainly delivering the goods for her hubby on Dad’s Day. "Richie is the life of the party,” says Nisha. “Then he moves to the next party and becomes the life of that one too! He's a real class clown, and no one loves the silly things he does as much as our little boy Kairo.”
“Growing up without a dad, I didn't really hold much meaning for fathers day,” she says, “but the bond Richie and Kai have has changed that. This year, we’ll be celebrating with our extended family around the barbecue, beers for all and some nice gin for Richie.” A budding gin enthusiast, Richie can expect some of the best on his special day. “We’re giving him a bottle of Hendrick’s Neptunia. You can’t go wrong with Hendrick’s,” says Nisha. This limited edition gin is infused with botanicals sourced from Scotland’s Ayrshire coastline for a crisp citrus finish. “Cheers Richie, and happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads out there!”
From Di to Mark: Kaesler The Bogan Shiraz
Buying your dad something called ‘The Bogan’ is a pretty bold move. But we have a feeling Loyalty Manager Di’s dad will see the funny side. “My dad is a great guy and a great entertainer,” says Di. “He’s an avid car fan – his Mustang is his pride and joy – and he loves a bargain.”
So, a rev head with an eye for value? A big Barossa Valley Shiraz like Kaesler’s sounds spot on. Grown on old vines for a big engine and plenty of flavour, The Bogan is a deeply concentrated drop perfect for hearty dinners. “He’s got way too many boxes in his cellar, but he always loves to pull out something special to match his famous curries.”
From Kate to Tony: Mountain Goat Very Enjoyable Beer
“My dad, Tony, doesn’t drink very often. Though he does love a beer on a ‘special occasion’,” says Digital Content Specialist Kate. “In my eyes, Father’s Day is exactly that, so we’ll have a beer together over a takeaway dinner of his choice,” she says. “Nine times out of ten, that means fish and chips.”
“I’m getting dad a six-pack of Mountain Goat Very Enjoyable Beer,” says Kate. “It’s exactly what the name says: very enjoyable!” A tried-and-true classic, this crisp, no-nonsense brew is practically the fish and chips of the beer world. “He’s an outdoorsy kind of guy, so these beers will probably come with a camping equipment voucher too.”
From Henry to Brian: Archie Rose Distilling Co. Single Malt Whisky
Digital Marketing Specialist, Henry, reckons his dad, Brian, is a bit of a larrikin. More on that later. “He loves to relax with the dog; he loves sport, and he loves Carlton,’ says Henry. He also loves a single malt, which is exactly what he’ll be unwrapping on Father’s Day.
“I’m getting dad this Archie Rose Distilling Co. Single Malt Whisky,” says Henry. Distilled in the heart of Sydney, this expressive whisky soaks up notes of char and toast from the distillery’s own air-dried ex-rye casks during the ageing process. “It’s got a lot of character, just like him, and I can’t wait to enjoy a nice glass with him on Father’s Day… he’ll probably have it with coke!” Huge larrikin energy.
From Sarah to Peter: Wynn's Black Label Cabernet
Sarah’s dad, Peter, is a pretty lucky bloke. “Father's Day and his birthday often overlap, so the weekend is always dedicated to him,” says Dan’s Digital Content & Campaign Manager. “The celebrations will usually include presents in the morning over coffee, some golf or a walk with the dogs in the day and finish with a family dinner. This year I’ll be gifting him a bottle of the Wynn's Black Label Cabernet to share with everyone over dinner.”
A classic in every sense, this big and bold red is the kind of wine that gives Coonawarra its rep for quality Cabernet. This one comes from Wynn’s 2013 vintage and earned a whopping 96 points from James Halliday, so it’s already pretty special. Another decade in dad’s cellar won’t do it any harm, but it’s a great way to mark the occasion if you can’t wait. “We like to try different wines together, so this is the perfect drop to open on his day.”
From Dimitri to Alex: Heaps Normal Quiet XPA
“For as long as I can remember, my dad has been the life of the party,” says Dimitri, who is actually me (I’ll drop the quotation marks now). Whether Dad’s belting out Sinatra standards at karaoke or lighting the coals for a spontaneous midnight souvlaki sesh, nothing beats a cold beer with him.
These days, he's the life of the morning as well. Waking up to find he's painted half the house, pruned his beloved roses AND cycled around the lake isn’t unusual. For Father's Day, I'm sorting him out with a case of Heaps Normal. Their Quiet XPA comes in at under 0.5% ABV but packs all of the refreshing beery taste of his faves. It'll be a well-earned reward for his home improvement blitzes and give us something to shoot the breeze over as well.
