A line-up of the best new premix cans available at Dan Murphy's

Get a sip of nostalgia for just $3 a can.

Remember the good ol’ lolly stores? The ‘pick and mix’ kind where you’d pay by the gram (or kilo, if Mum was feeling generous). You’d stand in front of the rainbow array agonising over sour peach hearts or sour grapes, raspberry Twizzlers or multi-coloured sour belts. Well, now we get that same feeling, except we’re standing in front of the fridge doors at Dan’s. Fruity, sweet, sour or perhaps a ginger beer?

We know there’s a lot to choose from, so what if we told you we’ve found a few alcoholic drinks that offer punchy flavours and a decent hit of nostalgia. Plus, if you visit your local Dan’s IRL, you can try each of these for $3 a can (which we think is a steal, especially because Mum’s probably making you pay for your own treats now).

1. Brookvale Union Red Pub Soda 6%

Remember when Vodka Raspberry was the drink order? Probably around the time Calvin Harris and Rhianna’s ‘We Found Love’ was top of the charts. The good old days. Well, Brookvale Union is giving us a throwback with its Red Pub Soda. It’s ruby red with notes of creaming soda, raspberry cordial and a hit of zest to balance the sweetness. Serve ice-cold from the can, alongside a burger (homemade or ordered-in is up to you).

2. Stone & Wood Peach Radler

Our mates at Stone & Wood changed the game with their Citrus Radler, only to then up the ante with a Peach addition a few months later. It’s a little hazy, a little sparkling and almost Spritz-like, with bright peach and citrus, and the ABV comes in at 4%. Serve this in the sun with a large piece of lemon tart.

3. Little Fat Lamb Zesty Orange Mimosa

A Mimosa in a can? Brunch just got better. This is bright orange and tastes like a zesty Mimosa with the sweetness of orange cordial. We’re serving this Little Fat Lamb at brunch with bacon and egg rolls and a hash brown or two. The salt and fat from the bacon will cut right through the Mimosa. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, add a smoky barbecue sauce to your B&E roll to temper the sweetness.

4. Sour Puss Alcoholic Sour Apple

PSA: Your favourite sour liqueurs now come in a ready-to-drink format. That’s right, Sour Puss is now serving up its electric green, mouth-puckering Alcoholic Sour Apple in a can. It’s right there in the name (twice), but you can expect some sourness and a candy-like sweetness to balance it out. We’re going all in on the zingy mouthfeel – pair the Sour Puss Sour Apple with a big bag of salt and vinegar chips. Is your mouth watering yet?

5. Hurricane Head Ginger Beer Mango Can

We’re all about ginger beers, especially those with a mango streak. The Hurricane Head Ginger Beer just levelled up – it’s got the sweet and spiciness we love in the OG, with the addition of the tropics (which makes sense with Hurricane Head being a QLD-based brewery). You’ll taste ripe mango with a kick of ginger and a hint of vanilla, and we’re pairing it with chilli and lime prawns on the barbie.
