A Gin & Tonic on a tray with a bowl of limes

Not sure which bottle to grab next? We’re here to help.

Gin is so bloody hot these days. Whether it’s locally distilled or one of those old-school classics, we reckon gin ranks alongside craft beer, new-wave wine and those flashy new premix tinnies as the best drink trends to boom in recent years. And considering the world’s favourite juniper spirit was once known as ‘mother’s ruin’ back in 18th-century England, gin has also pulled off the sort of comeback equalled only by the likes of Robert Downey Jr. Yeah, gin is in.

There’s a lot to love about gin, but top of the list might be its versatility. We adore gin every which way, from those sunny-day Gin and Tonics to pre-dinner Negronis or Martinis (among the other endless gin cocktails) and even when it’s sipped straight for that unadulterated flavour. Honestly, the only hard part is choosing which gin to drink, which is why we’ve dropped eight of our favourites below.

This selection is a mix of old and new, classic and a little out-there, so with an ever-growing choice of excellent gins on the shelves, consider this your shortcut to finding a winner.

The Archie Rose Mountain Yuzu Gin

1. Archie Rose Mountain Yuzu Gin

Classic gin is all about juniper – the tiny berry that gives the spirit its peppery, herbaceous flavour. For modern gin producers like Archie Rose, though, juniper is just part of the story – and they leave plenty of room for other flavours, like in this zesty, aromatic yuzu gin. Cool-climate mountain yuzu from Victoria’s Mt Buffalo brings an intense citrus flavour to the table, which shines through in everything from a G&T to a Gin Sour.

2. Another Hendrick’s Gin

Before the craft-gin boom, there was Hendrick’s – a cucumber-forward gin that really opened our eyes to what gin could be. Now, even in a world where inventive gin infusions are common, Hendrick’s is still pushing those boundaries, now bringing us ‘Another Hendrick’s Gin’ – an indulgent gin flavoured with orange blossom and cacao. It’s unusual territory for gin, which is perfect if you want to get creative. How about adding a chocolate-ish note to a Cold Brew Negroni, or as a floral sub for vodka in a Sgroppino?

3.36 Short Rhubarb Gin

Rhubarb calls to mind classic English tastes of old, making it a perfect pal for the nation’s most iconic spirit. Here, distillery 36 Short harnesses the earthy tartness of South Australian rhubarb (along with its signature pinky-red colour) for a unique infused gin. We reckon this rhubarb gin would work wonders combined with apple or pear, like in an Apple Strawberry Eastside.

4. 23rd Street Tropical Gin

Tropical flavours don’t seem to get enough love in the gin world, but South Aussie distillery 23rd Street is correcting that oversight. With its new Tropical Gin, the Renmark all-rounders (they also make brandy, vodka and whisky) have loaded up on passionfruit, mango, pineapple and finger lime for a sweet, juicy and zesty flavour bomb. This would happily add some extra personality to punches or tropical cocktails (like a fruity take on a Mojito, for instance), but with so much fruity sweetness already, a simple serve with soda over ice is an easy winner.

5. Roku Gin

Sure, everyone is obsessed with Japanese whisky these days (and rightly so), but don’t sleep on Japanese gin – especially Roku. Inside the iconic six-sided bottle is a gin that’s flavoured with six Japanese botanicals, including sansho pepper, yuzu and cherry blossom (as well as eight traditional botanicals). The result is a floral, zesty and slightly spicy gin that’s ideal for a Martini, Aviation, or any other classic cocktail that lets the gin shine through.

6. Bombay Sapphire Gin

Gin lovers, is there a more welcome sight than the blue bottle of Bombay Sapphire? The timeless classic is a perfect example of a London dry gin – a style that celebrates the herbaceous, peppery bite of juniper and other traditional botanicals. If that sounds less adventurous than some of those modern craft gins, consider the fact that gin doesn’t always need to show off. There’s still plenty of complexity here but, rather than dominate flavoursome cocktails like a Tom Collins or Gimlet, Bombay Sapphire sits in perfect harmony.

Tanqueray London Dry Gin is a classic example of London dry gin

7. Tanqueray London Dry Gin

This is another top-flight example of London Dry gin. And, considering Tanqueray has been using the same recipe since 1830, you know this is a no-nonsense classic. Tanqueray is all about spicy juniper and the warmth of botanicals like licorice and angelica root. The result is a gin with a pleasant grassiness, a little spice and plenty of peppery bite – perfect for lifting a Gin and Tonic (ideally garnished with a little slice of grapefruit or a sprig of thyme).
$58.90 Each

8. Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin

It’s funny to think that Four Pillars Rare Dry is now a classic, considering the distillery only started up in 2013. Since then, the Yarra company has made its flagship gin the poster child for the Aussie craft-gin movement – and we’re lucky to have such a delicious example lead the way. Beyond the juniper, Rare Dry is all about zesty orange flavours and the herbal touch of lemon myrtle. They reckon this works a treat in a Red Snapper (that’s the gin version of a Bloody Mary) and it’s hard to disagree but, to really taste the gin, serve this simply over ice with a slice of orange and you’re laughing.
