Raise a glass! Our ‘Roos are through to the next stage of the World Cup.

As all bleary-eyed soccer fans will now know, Australia rules Denmark. No, we’re not talking about Princess Mary. We’re talking about the mighty Socceroos, who just overcame a stacked Danish side to book a spot in the World Cup round of 16 – a feat truly worth celebrating!

Now, let’s not understate the enormity of this achievement. This is the furthest we’ve ever been in a World Cup, and our two wins so far account for 50% of all our World Cup wins combined. Are we underdogs? Sure. Would we have it any other way? Hell no! We love an underdog story in this country. And besides, victory tastes so much sweeter when you’re up against the odds.

So, as the nation patiently waits for the PM to jump on the telly and declare a public holiday, we took it upon ourselves to put together a list of drinks to toast our Socceroos with. For the triumph over Tunisia, the defeat of the Danes, and the challenge that awaits us when we meet Argentina, these are the best drinks for your soccer celebrations.

1. Little Giant Malbec

Our next challenger is Argentina. The two-time world champs are a tough slog for any side, but after eyeballing Lionel Messi, we reckon he’ll fit snugly in Harry Souttar's front pocket. Can we beat the Copa America champions at their own game? We already have. Case in point: Little Giant Malbec. Argentina might have made this grape famous, but this delicious South Australian drop shows we can mix it with the best of them. Rich dark berry and plum flavours make it the ideal drink for toasting a win (here’s hoping). We can match them in wine, now let’s prove it on the pitch

2. Autonomy Davo Plum Aperitivo

How bloody good was that goal? The touch. The turn. The shot. Mathew Leckie's winner will go down in history as one of our best. A Melbourne boy making good on the world stage – file it under ‘things you love to see.’ Alongside it is Autonomy Davo Plum Aperitivo. Another western suburbs wonder, this aperitif is a joyous celebration of native Australian ingredients and sustainable practices. Kind of perfect for celebrating this local hero.

3. Carlsberg Green Lager

Let’s be clear – we’ve got no beef with Denmark. We do share a royal after all! And we’re the first to admit that they know a thing or two about making beer. But to the victor go the spoils, and Carlsberg Green Lager is tasting particularly victorious right now. With the greatest respect to their grace in defeat, and in the spirit of the game, raising a Carlsberg to the opposition adds a touch of class to any celebration. So, here’s to you, Denmark.

4. Hawkesbury Brewing Co Ultra Low Alc Prohibition Pale Ale

We reckon there’s something in the water up in Gosford. Taking over from Mark Schwarzer was always going to be a tall order, but local hero Maty Ryan has now written his own legend. Adding some credence to our theory is Hawkesbury Brewing Co. Located just a stone’s throw from the Central Coast Mariners’ home ground (where Maty got his big break), this brewery’s Ultra Low Alc Prohibition Pale Ale is a legend in its own right. It’s a zero% beer we truly stand behind, with a delightfully bitter end. Let’s hope the Socceroos can fight to the bitter end, too.

5. Brookvale Union Vodka Lemon Squash

Lemon squash tastes about as Aussie as we all feel right now. Heaps! And on the first day of Australian summer, there’s nothing we’d rather be drinking than Brookvale Union’s Vodka Lemon Squash. It gets extra points for being as gold as our jersey, and it’s on Member Offer – meaning you can nab it for less with your My Dan’s card. No brainer.

6. Classic Shandy

“Any boss who sacks anyone today for not turning up is a bum.” Thus spoke Prime Minister Bob Hawke in the aftermath of Australia’s unforeseeable America’s Cup win. It’s fair to say that the bloke knew a thing or two about celebrating Aussie sporting excellence. This one’s for him: a Classic Shandy made with (you guessed it) Hawke’s Brewing Co. Lager. The best part? It’s on Member Offer right now, too.

7. Pavlova Spritz

“Pavlova is actually from New Zealand!” Yeah, yeah – we’ve heard it all before. But as the ones flying our very similar flags at the World Cup, we reckon you could probably share a bit of the credit on this one. In any case, this delicious cocktail is a worthy ode to the classic (Aussie) dessert. To mix up a winner, grab yourself some Old Young’s Pavlova Vodka and De Bortoli King Valley Prosecco. It’s right on time for the festive season and so good it might even get the Kiwis behind us.
We’re still waiting on that public holiday, and even if we never get it, these drinks are sure to see you through the rest of the World Cup. Here’s to our Socceroos!
