Old school hip-hop, boozy, fruity drinks and raucous good times: you bring the union, and they’ll make sure it’s electric.

The Best Rooftop Bar in Melbourne - Union Electric
Why you goDo the words ‘rooftop gin garden’ make your heart sing? How about the idea of a modern-day tiki bar with Bill Murray as its patron saint? Or a soundtrack of mostly vintage hip-hop played at the correct (loud) volume? Or perhaps an indoor-outdoor fitout that brings the party to even a quick, casual drink? If you’ve ticked any or all of the above boxes, Union Electric will be your idea of a good time. And the good times arrive, whether you’re perched upstairs in the timber-decked gin garden or leaning on the bar downstairs watching the bartenders pull together fruit-forward concoctions like a Hot-Line Sling, a punchy combo of gin, rum, pineapple, lime, ginger and falernum spice. This is no super-serious temple to the art of cocktail wizardry – though the drinks here are delicious, diverse and skilfully made – but a place that recognises the need we all have to have a laugh from time to time. But you would probably have already guessed that from the red neon lightning bolt that marks the entrance on Heffernan Lane or from the portrait of Bill Murray (in “Suntory Time” mode from Lost in Translation) that keeps a watchful eye over the downstairs bar. A bar with a sense of humour that also keeps a keen eye on the quality of its drinks? Sign us up.
Why you stay

There are two very different experiences available to you at Union Electric. It’s like going to a different bar simply by choosing whether or not to brave the stairs. Upstairs, the gin garden delivers resort vibes, complete with branded canvas umbrellas, palms and strings of Edison globes, plus a back-bar stacked with a herd of gins from across the globe, including an inspiring showing from Aussie distilleries. There’s also a seriously impressive selection of rums, many worthy of skipping the fruit and mixers altogether in favour of sipping them on the rocks to truly appreciate the craftsmanship of Latin American distillers.

Option two, downstairs among the exposed brick and the ‘Commit No Nuisance’ sign, is more about the tiki. This is a bar with an excellent collection of tiki mugs and a serious dedication to fruit, both whole and juiced. The fruit ranges from the wedges of fresh pineapple used as garnishes on an applause-worthy take on the Piña Colada to the fruit that’s infused in the house-made shrubs (aka non-alcoholic vinegar-based drinks infused, sweetened and added to cocktails or straight up for a winning non-alc option). It’s the lazy person’s bar crawl – you don’t even have to leave the building.

What drink to orderAll of the Union Electric cocktails are worth your attention but it’s an excellent idea to cast your eye over the seasonal cocktail list. Here you might find the Botanical, a refreshing, thirst-quenching mix of apple juice, elderflower cordial lemon and gin. The Bush Apple Sour, meanwhile, showcasing Bush Apple Gin, made using indigenous bush apples harvested by the Larrakia people of the Northern Territory, will make you feel good in more ways than one. For every one of these cocktails you order, Union Electric donates two dollars to the Aboriginal Community Harvest company.
Inside Union Electric Bar Melbourne
Who to takeOne of the best things about Union Electric is that it offers a little something for everyone, apart from those who are not hip-hop fans or have an aversion to fun-loving crowds. There are enough semi-secluded nooks and crannies and an abundance of very flattering lighting to make this an ideal spot for a first date, but it’s also great for groups because the two-bar set-up, the range of drinks and the quality of both the alcohol and the bartending means that this is a sure-fire crowd pleaser. If you’re friends with a drinks snob who only wants the finest things, direct them to the superb rum and gin collections. Do you have someone with you who likes a bit of flash and dazzle with their cocktails? The bar team will set a drink on fire or garnish it with so many paper umbrellas it might lift off in a stiff breeze. Got a pal who’s drinking dry? The zero-alcohol drinks here are so interesting and delicious they’re an attraction in themselves.
