People enjoying drinks at Misfits in Melbourne

Clubhouse vibes, a roster of DJs, locally sourced drinks and a trio of experienced operators combine seamlessly at this stylishly relaxed new neighbourhood joint.

Misfits is a neighbourhood bar in Footscray, Melbourne
Why you goThe essence of every great local bar is an ability to reflect the vibe of its surrounds without appearing try-hard. The effect should be relaxed – more clubhouse than showcase. So, if you’re looking for clues about why Footscray is now recognised as one of Melbourne’s coolest neighbourhoods, spending time in Misfits will steer you in the right direction. Taking over the space formerly known as Baby Snakes, Misfits is a brilliant bar with a great attitude, but it’s also a music and visual art hub, reflecting the neighbourhood’s growing reputation as a multicultural epicentre for the alternative and underground. It all makes for an exciting mix – expect a regular roster of DJs, both local and from further afield, walls hung with vibrant work from local and international artists, and a drinks list that favours smaller local producers. And while Misfits has a definite cool vibe, it’s also entirely welcoming. It’s the sort of bar that makes you feel like a local, even if you’ve blown in from the other side of the city.
Why you stayMisfits is a great example of not needing a million dollars to create an enticing and original space. A lick of paint (in warm, earthy tones), flattering lighting, a surfeit of indoor plants and timber (including the stage and DJ booth down one end) and comfortable places to sit both inside and on an outdoor terrace make this a place where you immediately feel like settling in. The staff are great, too, unfailingly friendly even when the place is pumping. Add the fact you can get pizza delivered to your table from neighbour Slice, one of the finest purveyors of New York-style pizza in town, and it’s impossible to understand why you wouldn’t stay a little longer.
What drink to orderLocal beer lovers are very well served by Misfits’ list, with some of Victoria’s finest small breweries – Bodriggy, Boatrocker and Footscray’s own Hop Nation, among them – available packaged or on tap. But it’s a good idea to also give the cocktail list some of your attention. There are well-made versions of the classics alongside a collection of good-time drinks that riff on standards like Mai Tais and Spritzes while also favouring Australian distillers and house-made components such as shrub syrups and infusions. Though not officially the Misfit signature cocktail, the Cherry Ripe Boulevardier, combining coconut fat-washed Starward whisky with Campari, sweet vermouth and cherry syrup, is a prime example of the house drinks: a witty and delicious combination of style and substance.

Why we love itFor those who don’t live within walking distance, Misfits is just a short stroll from Footscray station, making this neighbourhood bar perfectly accessible for anyone living outside postcode 3011 who can’t reach a consensus on whose turn it is to be designated driver. But there’s good news for designated drivers, too: Misfits’ low- and no-alcohol list is a short, sharp collection that includes good options from Heaps Normal and Molly Rose.
Don’t leave without A constantly changing roster of DJs graces the Misfits stage from Thursday to Sunday and is one of the bar’s chief and signature attractions. The bill is chock-full with a wide and eclectic range of styles from neo-soul rap to South African house. For hardcore music and selector fans, Misfits also programs regular panel discussions with featured DJs and live recordings.
