A rooftop bar in Carlton that gives off Italian beach-club vibes – Aperol Spritz on tap, thin-crust pizza, mood-elevating DJs – Johnny’s Green Room delivers the good times.

Why you go

The original Johnny’s Green Room was a notorious, dimly lit, late-night hangout, all cigarettes and pool tables – a favourite of students, gangsters and artists during Carlton’s bohemian era in the 1960s and ’70s. The new version could hardly be more different. Sitting on the roof of the refurbished King & Godfree building on Lygon Street, 2020s-era Johnny’s is an excellent addition to Melbourne’s ever-expanding catalogue of rooftop bars. Spacious and all-weather (heating and canopies make the space habitable even during Melbourne’s winter), Johnny’s has an Italian beach-club vibe and incredible 270-degree views over Carlton and towards Melbourne’s CBD. It’s an Aperol Spritz and pizza kind of joint, user-friendly, and as accommodating for larger birthday-celebrating groups as it is for a weekly catch-up with your besties after a movie at Cinema Nova. Just like its 1960s predecessor, Johnny’s is a great place to get an eyeful of the Carlton crowd, even if the latest incarnation is a little heavier on the Spritz-drinking beautiful people and lighter on the gangsters, artists and cigarette smoke. Still, the spirit of good times remains and, as the night wears on, proves to be charmingly infectious.

Why you stayThe red neon sign that marks Johnny’s entrance is a pretty good indication of the kind of night you’re headed for here – definitely more nightclub than quiet, chin-stroking contemplation over vintage whisky or wine. If a party’s your vibe, you’ve come to the right place – this is a rooftop bar conceived with a sizeable crowd in mind and skilled at keeping everybody fed and watered, even when approaching its 200-person capacity. The drinks list includes a variety of on-tap offerings – a more-than-decent Aperol Spritz, beer and wine – while the food is tailored to the audience. The crowd-pleasing mix of burgers covers beef, chicken and veggie, and the pizzas embrace classic Italian ingredients – San Marzano tomatoes, San Daniele prosciutto ham, fresh fior di latte cheese, porcini mushrooms – and are better than they probably need to be. Add open fireplaces that keep things cosy when it’s chilly, a solid sound system and a variety of seating and potted plants that break up the large space, and Johnny’s has a knack for making you stay for just a little longer.

What drink to orderJohnny’s takes an easy-drinking approach to cocktails, beer and wine without compromising on quality. There's a good range of local and European wine by the glass and bottle, but you might also consider what’s available on tap. The white blend of montevecchio, vermentino and fiano made in Heathcote is a nicely balanced, fruit-forward wine that’s a great match for the pizzas here, while the nero d’Avola blend, also from Heathcote, is very good friends with Johnny’s wagyu burger.
Why we love itThe view from Johnny’s Green Room is pretty special, taking in the Victorian streetscapes of Carlton, and landmarks like Melbourne Museum and the dome of the Exhibition Building as well as the city skyline. It’s a pretty vista during the day, and when night rolls in it has an undeniable glamour that adds a little something extra.
Regular’s tipJohnny’s Green Room is very popular on weekends, particularly when the weather is balmy, so if you’re not interested in waiting in a queue, booking a table here is an excellent idea.

Don’t leave withoutKing & Godfree has been in the same family since the 1950s. The family also started the canned-tuna brand Sirena and, as a nod to that history, Johnny’s sports the original neon Sirena sign, restored to its original neon-mermaid glory. Check it out – it’s both cool and historic.
Who to take

Johnny’s is one of those chameleon-like places that can change to suit the occasion and time of day. Want to have a simple lunch with your parents? Bring them up here on a sunny day for a friction-free get-together. But this rooftop bar equally provides a romantic backdrop for a date – who could fail to be charmed by twinkling city lights? – or the correct volume of partying for when you and your friends have something worth celebrating.
