Why you goCanberra has never had a bar quite like this. Ride the lift down to this smart watering hole and step into the capital’s best cocktail bar, where the only thing as good as the drinks is the atmosphere. Sure, you might be in New Acton (hotel central for out-of-towners), but this hidden gem shines like a diamond. Slip downstairs on a weeknight and things might be pared-back and sophisticated. Go later in the week and rock ’n’ roll will throb out of the speakers deep into the small hours. Visit on a weekend and hip-hop fuels the fire. As for the drinking, owner Noriel “Noz” Calub cut his teeth as manager at Molly, Canberra’s original speakeasy specialising in whisky, smooth stylings and cocktails with a difference. Here, his staff branch out into all manner of drinking, covering all bases with a twinkle in the eye and no shortage of skill. The short version? This newcomer is an instant classic.
Why you stay

High Jinks promises signature cocktails, rockabilly beats and “silly goose times”, and delivers on all three. There’s no better way to spend a night here than sprawled on the bottle-green leather banquettes, cocktails spread over candlelit marble tables in front of you, lights glinting through the stained-glass above. Which is one way to say it’s a real vibe. Throw in velvet curtains, the odd Persian rug salvaged from a discount store, and a beautifully lit mirrored bar and this is one fine drinking experience.

Fancy? Sure. But these guys don’t take themselves too seriously: pipes, vents and sprinklers are all naked and exposed, specials are scrawled on blackboards and the mood is super-casual and approachable. And that’s the real trick – no cocktail nerds or mixologists geeking out over their creations; just friendly folk who know how to mix a top-notch drink. There’s a reason this place won the ACT’s 2021 Cocktail Bar of the Year at the Australian Bar Awards. Still need convincing? Order a Baker’s Dozen, which brings yellow and green Chartreuse into a refreshing mix with verjuice, bitters and house-made apple and rosemary soda, and see for yourself.

What drink to order

Drinks here jump around with the seasons, but, whatever the weather, count on things being done right. That means clear ice, frosty glasses and balance across the board. Start with a Highball Royale, which takes Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz gin, layers in ginger wine, Seedlip Grove for a herbal edge and soda for fizz. Mega-quenching. Want more kick? An El Jefe will put hairs on your chest – Patrón Silver tequila washed in burnt butter and sage, and finished with macadamia, wattleseed and a mezcal spritz. They also mix one hell of a signature, Lord Jim’s Zombie, made with three rums, fruit juices, absinthe, fire and everything.

It’s not all about cocktails, though. Wines are all local and just $12 a pop, and there’s Mountain Goat, Asahi, Balter XPA and more on top. Win.

What to pair it withThe snack game here is strong. Yep, there’s good cheese and cured meats, but the spicy patatas bravas with aïoli are exactly what you need during a night on the tiles. Don’t skimp on the Portuguese chicken wings either – the perfect match for an crisp beer or something spritzy from the cocktail list.
Why we love itCanberra’s drinks scene is definitely on the up. High Jinks is part of a new guard proving that this small city can punch well above its weight. Add neighbours Rebel Rebel for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Fekerte’s for curries and Monster for more drinks and snacks, and suddenly an area that used to be majorly underserviced is coming into its own. The fun bit is enjoying it before the hordes have caught on.
Who to takeHigh Jinks is for everyone and anyone, whatever the mood, whatever the occasion. Cuddle up on a banquette, fly solo at the bar, or stake out a corner spot with a group for a full-blown celebration. In true Canberra style the crowd here is a mix of ages, tastes and styles. Come as you are. Leave better for it.
