Why you go

Glittering city vistas, widescreen river views and quirky close-ups of the Meccano-like underside of the Story Bridge – Crystalbrook Vincent’s stylish rooftop sanctuary is a triple treat for guests, particularly during the dramatic Brisbane sunset. As darkness falls, the massive steel ribs of the bridge light up like a fairground ride and the city skyline comes into its own. Cleverly, tall stools and bar counters are ranged right around the perimeter of the terrace to maximise river and city views, with a clutch of high-top tables in the centre arrayed beneath chic cream-coloured umbrellas along with low, more laid-back seating areas. Orders are efficiently taken via a tabletop QR code (the hotel is a cash-free zone), and drinks and snacks are delivered swiftly.

Why you stay

‘Fiume’ is Italian for river and you certainly get a chance to drink in some impressive Insta-worthy waterscapes while you’re here. A feel-good, holiday mood comes via a DJ spinning beats, a Euro-chic charcoal and white colour scheme and a glamorous crowd enjoying balmy evening breezes, the occasional whiff of chlorine from an adjacent pool boosting the vibe. Menu items such as grazing boards for six make Fiume a popular spot for knock-off drinks and get-togethers with friends, but there are usually date-night couples and hotel guests to be found as well, Spritzes in hand.

You don’t need to be a guest of this five-star hotel to take the lift up to the third floor, but it’s best to call and book to ensure you’re not stuck in the lobby waiting for a table. It’s a popular spot, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays, so you may wait a while, but there are compensations. You can spend time admiring the impressive collection of Vincent Fantauzzo originals that line the foyer walls. Crystalbrook Vincent hotel is named for the artist and his works also hang in rooms and hallways.

What drink to orderHow about the 1930 Classic? The date refers to when the venerable Story Bridge was built and seems an apt choice when you’ve got the chance to check out the old girl’s structure up so close and personal. The cocktail mixes sloe gin from Byron Bay distillery Brookie’s with apricot brandy, dark cacao and pomegranate. The award-winning handiwork of the Gold Coast hinterland’s Tamborine Mountain Distillery features here in a range of cocktails. Its Native Negroni gin, for instance, is mixed in the Native Martini with the distillery’s eucalyptus vodka and quandong and gentian liqueur alongside limoncello and vermouth, arriving properly icy with a lemon twist.
What to pair it with: Crystalbrook Vincent likes to keep the focus local, so produce from south-east Queensland peppers the menu. Blistered Sunshine Coast prawns might be there, enlivened with Stanthorpe green apple and Mapleton native lime, while the ever-present burger is gussied-up with washed-rind cheese from Mount Tamborine. Grazing boards, meanwhile, solve decision-making.

Regular’s tip: If you’re seeking a spot for the best Insta shot, don’t be in too much of a hurry to reach the bar. As you enter Fiume from the third-floor hallway, pause and check out the handsome stuccoed pillars supporting the Story Bridge. Get the angle right and you can frame the New Farm reach of the river neatly in a bridge arch.
Don’t leave without: Saving a little cash! If you’re from Brisbane, sign up online to the Crystalbrook locals’ club for discounts. Show the staff your confirmation email, receive your membership card and then get 15% off your bills.
Who to take:Fiume is an alfresco party that welcomes all. The vibe is celebratory, so it makes a stylish spot to kick off someone’s special night. With stunning views, it’s the perfect spot for impressing out-of-towners, too. Just think of it as a supersized, sophisticated Queensland deck with an absolutely extraordinary outlook.
