Felons Brewing is in a prime position at Manly Wharf, Sydney

A Brisbane brewery swaps riverside vibes for a harbour panorama at Manly Wharf. Come for the beer, linger for the views and stay for the standout food.

Why you goBorn on the Brisbane River, Felons Brewery has set up another waterfront home on Manly Wharf, delivering great views, tasty snacks and even better beers. From regular drink-and-dine deals to free fitness programs and family-focused community days, this is a brew pub that welcomes everyone from locals to day-trippers. It’s near impossible to find a bad seat in the house. Grab a table on the deck looking straight over the water, park in the dining room with its soft banquettes and excellent menu designed by a fine-dining chef, or simply hang out at the bar with your best mates and a few crafties.
What drink to orderBeer really is The Thing here. Order a tasting paddle so you can try a few things. Galaxy Haze is a house favourite – tropical paradise meets hazy pale ale – and special shout-out to the IPA, which tastes like fresh-baked bread and quenches like a classic India pale ale. Lovers of minimalism, clean flavours and altruism might enjoy the Japanese rice lager, brewed in support of Seabin, a foundation devoted to filtering plastic pollution from Australian waterways. Every glass bought funds the removal of a piece of plastic from Sydney Harbour. While malt-based refreshment might be the name of the game, Felons also offers classic cocktails such as a Tommy’s Margarita (a slightly cooler version of a regular Margarita, with agave nectar instead of the orange liqueur) and an Aperol Spritz (bittersweet aperitivo meets dry sparkling wine, finished with a splash of soda water for easy-drinking summer afternoons). Felons also has a decent range of non-alcoholic options and a succinct wine list.

What to eatThis is a brew bar with an exceptional menu of things you’ll want to eat. Overseen by chef Corey Costelloe (he's the guy behind Marrickville neighbourhood grillhouse 20 Chapel), the menu goes beyond the steak and burger options you'd typically find at a brew bar. And while there's no shortage of options on that front (hello, burger with the lot and steak frites), there's also a focus on good produce, grilled simply. Start with slices of raw tuna covered in baby capers and lightly pickled onions, and a few rounds of oysters, then move onto a whole line-caught whiting from Coffs Harbour with a side of green leaves. Bonus points if you also order the triple-cooked chips fried in beef fat. There’s a menu of Naples-style pizza – excellent for sharing among a few friends – and, very excitingly, a Wednesday mixed grill. How good.
Regular’s tipThe Felons run club happens every Wednesday evening, welcoming all ages and stages, from gentle lumberers to super-sprinters. The run starts and ends at the brewery, it’s free to attend and if further incentive beyond those sweet endorphins is needed, all participants are shouted a beer or kombucha as a delicious reward.
Make it fancyDid somebody say half a lobster and fries with curry butter accompanied with a glass of Champagne? This is your signal to hop on a ferry to Manly immediately.
