Why you go

Just a few footsteps from Manly beach, smack-bang in the middle of the main promenade, lies one of the beaches’ most iconic pubs, the New Brighton Hotel. It’s your quintessential Aussie beachside public house, complete with wrap-around balconies and a fancy-schmancy rooftop. The building boasts four floors and four bars, so there’s heaps of space. Open windows on the lower floor allow for great people-watching, while the upper levels serve up views of Manly to Queenscliff, and even a cheeky view of the famous Brookvale oval.

The bistro offers a fairly traditional pub menu and is open seven days a week. If you’re lucky enough to bag a seat next to the open windows or on the balcony during the weekend, you’ll have prime viewing of the Manly markets and front row seats for the weekend buskers. The New Brighton stays open till 3am on Fridays and Saturdays, and till midnight most other nights – so if you like a boogie and are a bit of a night owl, this is the spot for you.

Why you stay

Is there anything more enjoyable than a quick dip in the ocean before a couple of cold ones on a hot day’s afternoon? Of course not! The New Brighton Hotel is everything you’d ever need in a beachside pub. It’s got your pub grub, your how-ya-going locals, plenty of places to bask in the sunshine and an excellent selection of beers on tap. What else could you possibly ask for?

It’s the kind of pub that is out-of-towner friendly and super chill. There’s also a pretty decent sized pool table on the lower ground and plenty of giant TVs to watch your sports, if that’s what you’re into.

What drink to orderDon’t overthink your drinks order. While this pub does offer up a good selection of cocktails, this isn't a specialty cocktail bar and you shouldn't expect them to be. Our suggestion? With such a solid list of beers and ciders on tap (32 in total, with impeccably clean lines), it’s hard to go past a nice cold beer or cider. We recommend going local with a good ol’ pint of 4 Pines or a refreshing schooner of Young Henry’s Newtowner.

What to pair it with

Eating at a pub isn’t a fancy affair. It's an inclusive, know-what-you’re-getting, relaxed kind of meal, which is why Aussies froth it. The menu at The New Brighton Hotel is just that. It’s got all your classics. From fish and chips to steak to a big ol’ burg, it’s a menu filled with love and that uniquely Aussie-pub style of eating. It’s worth a perusal for sure, but like any real pub menu, it’s hard to go past a well-cooked schnitty. The New Brighton soak their chicken breast in buttermilk to tenderise, then batter in a flaky, golden crust. Pair that with a shovel of crispy chippies and a slap of heavy gravy and hey presto! There’s your pub lunch.

If you’re after something fresh, and perhaps a tad healthier (sacrilege), the hotel offers some delicious fresh salad bowls. And good news! It’s vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free friendly. Just chat with the staff about your options.

Why we love itAs we mentioned above, you’d be hard-pressed to find a pub in a better location (sea spray so close you could lick it off your face), but it’s the community and the salt-of-the-earth service that gives us reason to keep coming back. It’s not trying to be flashy, it’s just a really good pub with some fantastic Aussie pub grub.
Regular’s tipGet there early and secure your spot in the sun, next to the pool table or near a window. Other than that, we suggest heading there on a weekend for some primo market-going people watching.
Who to takeIt’s a big pub, so the more the merrier! Bring your extended fam, your workmates or anyone around – there’s plenty of space. It’s an especially great place for a big birthday bash or end-of-year gathering – but it’s popular, so book early.
