The Jasmine cocktail in a coupe glass with a lemon twist

This classy, gin-based cocktail brings plenty of zest and refreshment.

About the cocktail

Described by the New York Times as a modern classic, the Jasmine was created by bartender Paul Harrington in the early 1990s. It was named for one of Paul’s college friends and quickly became popular all over the US through word of mouth. Its place in cocktail folklore was cemented in 1998 when the Bellagio Casino, of Ocean’s Eleven fame, opened a Chinese restaurant named Jasmine and made Paul’s invention the signature cocktail.

The ingredients in this cocktail should be familiar to most people who love a good mixed drink, but perhaps not in this combination. Together, they create a delicious balance of sweet, aromatic, bitter and bright, all wrapped up in a sophisticated little sipper – we think the coupe glass adds to the effect.

Watch: How to make a Jasmine

Ingredients

  • 45mL gin
  • 15mL Italian red bitter liqueur (such as Aperol or Campari)
  • 10mL triple sec
  • 25mL lemon juice
  • 5mL sugar syrup

Method

  1. Add all ingredients to cocktail shaker and add a good scoop of ice
  2. Shake for 1 minute
  3. Strain the shaker into a coupe glass
  4. Garnish with a twist of lemon

Dan’s top tips

If you enjoy the Jasmine, you may want to try making a Campari Sour. Just add 45mL of Campari, 15mL sugar syrup, 30mL lemon juice and an egg white into a cocktail shaker. Shake, and then add ice before shaking again, and then strain into a glass and garnish the top with five to 10 drops of bitters. The egg white makes for a nice, foamy texture, just like in a Whiskey Sour.
