Looking into a coupe glass holding the Sumo in a Sidecar cocktail

We’re here to make a case for this stone fruit brandy (or liqueur) to take a permanent spot on your bar cart.

Okay, let’s get something straight. Apricot brandy is not just something that’s been gathering dust in your grandma's cupboard for the past decade – it’s possible that she has a bottle, but it’s so much more than that. First off, there's apricot brandy and there's also apricot liqueur, and while they're not exactly the same, you can generally use them (almost) interchangeably.

Apricot brandy is distilled from apricots, and its sweetness comes from the fruit rather than added sugar. Apricot liqueur, on the other hand, usually has sweetener added. Still with us? If you have apricot liqueur at home, don’t toss it; simply pour a little less than the amount called for, otherwise your cocktail will be a little OTT when it comes to the sweetness. Ready to get mixing? These are six of our best apricot brandy cocktails.

The Sumo in a Sidecar cocktail showcases sake
1. Sumo in a SidecarThe Sumo in a Sidecar is a sake-based twist on the classic Sidecar cocktail recipe. We're keeping the lemon from the OG, but we're swapping the Cognac and triple sec for sake and, yep, you guessed it, apricot brandy. A little fruity, a little sour, you can make this cocktail in three steps – that's what we call low effort, high reward. Serve in a coupe or martini glass to be rewarded with 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' from the group.
2. Charlie ChaplinIt’s the age-old question: who’s more famous – Charlie Chaplin the comic actor, or the cocktail by the same name? Well, the cocktail was named after old mate Charlie, but we reckon there’s room for both of ’em. Dating back to before Prohibition, the Charlie Chaplin is an equal-parts cocktail that makes it a cinch to remember and even easier to whip up. It’s 25mL each of sloe gin, lime juice and apricot brandy. With just three ingredients there’s nowhere to hide, so the key here is high-quality alcohol and, if you can swing it, fresh lime juice. One of these will go perfectly with your favourite silent film.

The Iced Tea-quila cocktail is refreshing and easy to make
3. Iced Tea-quila
We see your favourite tequila cocktails – Margs, Palomas, Batangas, Ranch Water – and we raise you the Iced Tea-quila. That's right, it's a blend of tequila, apricot brandy, lemon juice, grapefruit soda and English breakfast tea. Say less. Having your bookclub over? Forget regular tea, we’re having Tea-quila. Build your Iced Tea-quilas in highball glasses and serve them alongside a round of pork tacos with extra coriander and lime.
4. Hotel Nacional

Cuba sure has been responsible for more than a few of our favourite cocktails – the Mojito, Cuba Libre and Daiquiri, to name a few. But it's also the home of the Hotel Nacional (AKA the winter Daiquiri). It's all dark rum (yum), apricot brandy, pineapple juice and lemon juice (always remember, fresh is best), and it’s garnished with a chunky wedge of pineapple. It's exactly what we drink when we're stuck at home wishing we were sitting on the pristine beaches of Cuba.

The Hot Buttered Rum is a warm, rich and tasty cocktail
5. Hot Buttered RumWe like to have the Hot Buttered Rum bookmarked for when the sun has set on summer and we’re pulling out scarves and jackets (but it’s good year-round, tbh). Light rum, apricot brandy, orange juice and peel, cloves and butter. That’s right, butter. You’ll need a stove for this one, but it really is so simple. Add everything into a saucepan and bring it to a simmer (just don’t leave it too long or you’ll boil off the alcohol). Garnish with a little nutmeg, and set up for a comfy night on the couch with a new ep of Housewives.
6. Dan MurphizzWhat do you get when you marry a Tom Collins with a Gin Fizz? The Dan Murphizz, of course. If you were lucky enough to pull up a stool at the iconic Dan's Diner for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival a couple of years ago, then you might remember this baby. It's gin, apricot brandy, lemon juice, sugar syrup, egg white (or aquafaba – the gelatinous goodness from a can of chickpeas) and soda water to top. It's foamy, fresh and fruity – everything we love in a drink. Trying to recreate Dan's Diner at home? Then it has to be a hot dog with all the trimmings to go with.
