From truffle hunts to floating saunas, there's plenty of adventure to be had in North Tassie.

Spending a few days in northern Tassie and feeling all wined out? (If that’s even a thing.) Then you'll be pleased to know that there are plenty of fun-filled, Insta-worthy adventures to discover that don't revolve around wine. And hey, we're not saying you should ditch the wineries – there are too many brilliant ones to ignore – but for those days in between, northern Tassie has plenty more to offer. So whether you love golf, hiking or mountain-biking, you'll find the perfect accompanying activity right here.
1. Hunt for truffles at Truffle Farm Tasmania

@the_truffle_farm

Fans of truffle – the pungent, gastronomical superstar – will love an opportunity to take part in a real-life truffle hunt, and fortunately those who aren't huge fans of funghi will find plenty to enjoy too. The Truffle Farm Tasmania is a 45-minute drive west of Launceston and promises a scenic day out near the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. It was Australia's first truffle farm and you can not only learn about all things truffle, but also join the hunt alongside specially-trained truffle dogs (like Doug – truffle sniffer, Instagram icon and very good boy). There's an on-site farm shop, where you can purchase a range of truffle products, and a number of truffle tasting options available too. Bring your camera, bring your sense of smell, and let the hunt begin!

2. Explore Cataract Gorge – Launceston's perfect slice of wildernessA trip to Cataract Gorge is a quintessential Launceston experience. Located just 15 minutes from the city centre, the gorge is super popular with visitors and locals alike, boasting plenty of walking trails, a chairlift, a suspension bridge, a swimming pool right by the water, and endless opportunities to enjoy some peace and quiet. Come for an hour, come for a morning, come for an entire day – whatever your timeframe, you won't be disappointed by the dramatic cliffs, manicured gardens and sense of peace that comes with natural spaces.
3. Play a round of golf at Barnbougle

@barnbougle

Barnbougle lays claim to being not only Australia's premier golfing destination, but also one of the world's top golf courses. Built alongside Tasmania's rugged north coast, Barnbougle provides a stunning setting to swing a club, whether you're a golf fanatic or an eager beginner. They've recently opened a 14-hole short course too, for those who don't feel like playing a full 18-hole round. There's more to Barnbougle than golf, however, with the resort offering a range of accommodation options and a fantastic bar and restaurant; in fact, given the food, wine and views on offer, we can't blame you if you choose to bypass the golf altogether.

4. Hit the world-class trails at Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trails

@bluederby

Derby was once a thriving mining town, but these days people are digging the outdoor opportunities more than the earth. Top of the attraction list is Blue Derby, a mountain-bike park encompassing over 85km of dirt trails. The stunning wilderness caters for everyone from beginner mountain bikers to elite athletes, and best of all, the trails are completely free to ride and open every day of the year. Once you've finished, there's plenty to keep you occupied in town, so treat yourself to a big feed at the local pub and reward yourself after a day of hard riding in a true natural paradise.

5. Sweat it out in style at Lake Derby's floating sauna

@floatingsauna_lakederby

It's all in the name, right? This stunning sauna sits atop the surface of Lake Derby and can be booked for either a private group or individual session, an hour at a time. It's perhaps the closest you can get to Finland without leaving Australia, bringing a slice of Scandinavia to our favourite southern state. Simply sit and sweat it out as you take in the epic views of Lake Derby, or perhaps opt for a DIY hot-and-cold treatment by alternating between lake dips and sauna sessions. Either way, this is an unmissable stop on any Tassie road trip.
