Dirty Martini dip topped with olives next to a plate of chips

Your regular French Onion has nothing on these tasty spiked dips.

Just when you think alcohol can’t get any more versatile, you put it in a dip – and it blows your mind. Yep, a splash of booze in a homemade dip (or dessert) can take flavour to the next level. And since there’s usually a bottle hanging around in the cupboard, it’s never too hard to whip up something tasty when you’ve got mates coming over.

So, what got us thinking about alcoholic dips? A wave of Dirty Martini dip recipes popping up on our TikTok FYPs. Naturally, we wondered what other dips can you add alcohol to, and, as it turns out, there are quite a few. And while these creamy little numbers aren’t exactly going to tip you over the limit, it’s always best to make sure guests know what’s in there before you serve them.

Here are four easy recipes to try when a tub of store-bought hummus just won’t cut it.

1. Dirty Martini dip

  • Meet the dip taking our social feeds by storm and causing us to love those salty, briny Dirty Martini flavours even more (who knew that was possible?). Most of the key ingredients you’ll probably have at home; just be sure to invest in a decent jar of olives given they’re the main event.

    Ingredients

    • 1 tub of cream cheese
    • 2 tbsp blue cheese (optional, but highly recommended)
    • 1-2 shots of gin
    • 4 tbsp of olive brine
    • Olives
    • Olive oil
    • Salted potato chips

    Method

    1. Using a food processor, combine the cream cheese, gin, olive brine, and blue cheese (if using). Blend until silky smooth.
    2. Transfer to a serving bowl, then finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a handful of olives.
    3. Scoop it up with chips, or for a bite-sized appetiser, dollop some dip onto a potato chip and crown it with an olive.

Try it with: Threefold Distilling Mediterranean Gin

It’s bursting with fresh herbal aromas with a Riverland lemon peel, juniper and coriander seed backbone. And given it’s inspired by Mediterranean cuisine, it seems only fitting that it’s enjoyed in a delicious dip.

2. Beer cheese dip

  • Don’t let the name throw you – this is a tasty dip that will elevate your backyard drinks and nibbles to micro-brewery stakes. It’s smooth, creamy and packs a robust flavour punch, and better yet, it’s easy to customise and can be whipped up in 15 minutes.

    Ingredients

    • 2½ cups of sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
    • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
    • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
    • 180mL milk
    • 150mL cup beer
    • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
    • ½ tsp garlic powder
    • ¼ tsp smoked paprika
    • ¼ tsp salt

    Method

    1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in flour until a thick paste forms.
    2. Slowly whisk in the milk, stirring until slightly thickened.
    3. Whisk in the remaining ingredients one at a time.
    4. Remove from heat and transfer to a serving dish and sprinkle with extra cheese (if your heart desires). The dip will thicken as it cools and is delicious warm or at room temperature.

Try it with: San Miguel Pale Pilsen

When it comes to choosing a beer, it’s a good idea to opt for something with a deeper flavour. The San Miguel Pale Pilsen is  rich and full-bodied with a smooth finish that’s perfect in a dip like this. You can always opt for a pale ale or wheat beer, but the result will be a little more mellow. Skip the fruity beers this time around.

3. Red wine hummus

  • A hearty dip, this spin on traditional hummus still uses chickpeas, but adds red wine for an earthy kick.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cans chickpeas (drained and well-rinsed)
    • 1 white onion, chopped
    • 2 tsp minced garlic
    • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
    • 1/2 cup red wine
    • Juice of 1 lemon
    • 1/2 tsp pepper
    • 1 tsp sea salt
    • 1/3 cup olive oil

    Method

    1. Rinse and drain the chickpeas.
    2. Sauté onion, garlic and sesame seeds with the red wine over a medium-low heat until the wine evaporates (5-10 mins).
    3. Blend chickpeas, wine mixture, lemon juice, salt and pepper in a food processor, slowly adding olive oil in three parts.
    4. Garnish and serve with your usual favourite crunchy accompaniments.

Try it with: Little Giant Grenache

A popular red from South Australia’s esteemed McLaren Vale region, it offers a bold fruit intensity that will shine here, with notes of berries, vanilla and fresh spices. Little Giant is a proud Platinum supporter of WIRES animal rescue, supporting the ongoing care, recovery and wellbeing of wombats. We love to see it.

4. Baileys fruit dip

  • Who said dips had to be savoury? Whip out this little dessert number next time the sweet cravings take hold.

    Ingredients

    • ¼ cup Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur
    • 2 tbs brown sugar
    • 250g sour cream
    • 500g strawberries (for dipping)

    Method

    1. Mix the Baileys, brown sugar and sour cream until smooth.
    2. Serve with fresh strawberries for dipping. Easy!

Try it with: your liqueur of choice

This recipe calls for Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur, but any liqueur that takes your fancy will do the job – think, amarettoKahlua or Cointreau. We love just how simple this recipe is with only four ingredients.
