Drink this, burn that.

We’re heading into the summer of freedom, and chances are you’ll be out more than you’re in (sorry, COVID puppy). You’ll be checking out new bars, going for long lunches with your BFFs and zooming up the coast for a much needed getaway, but you’ll also be doing something else you haven’t been able to do for a very long time: entertaining. When your much-missed friends come over for a squeeze and a catch up, you want your home to smell lovely, and as much as possible, like all the lovely things you’re smelling outside and sipping something that feels fresh and sunny. You’re home because you want to be, not because you have to be, and olfactory (and gustatory) changes will help your brain make that distinction. These pairings are also approved for those times when you’re needing a little break from all the sudden socialising, but still want to feel outside. Ahead, what to burn and what to drink for your best summer ever.

An orange wine and the sun in a jar

You know when you wake up early in summer, and even though the sun is only just coming up, you can already tell it’s going to be a hot, glorious day? Well, now imagine you’re doing that, but your home is in an orange grove. That’s the feeling you get from burning Maison Balzac Le Soleil Scented Candle. Citrusy, energetic and undoubtedly positive, adjectives that could also be used to describe Serafino Orenji Project McLaren Vale White Blend. A new wave wine bursting with zest, notes of ginger, mandarin, orange and rose petals, it is a decidedly summer sip. Together, this candle and wine lets you smell and sip sunshine all at once.

An SA cab sav and a candle that smells like your favourite cafe

Specifically, your favourite cafe in Paris, and no, it’s not basic if that’s Café de Flore. That place is iconic for a reason. Why French? Because that is what inspired the spicy sandalwood and coffee-scented Lola James Harper Coffee Shop Candle. The other great thing about Parisian cafes is that they sell wine. Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is exactly the kind of red you’d order to sip while sitting outside the cafe at one of those truly tiny but very cute tables. Something you can now simulate on your own balcony, with just a candle and a bottle. Tres chic.

A famous French rosé and a waxy sweet treat

Sometimes having a sweet tooth can get you a bad wrap, but just because you like the smell of vanilla doesn’t mean you hold an unrefined palate. This candle and wine are testament to your cause. Glasshouse Fragrances Montmartre Macaron Candle is the candle version of a vanilla cream puff dusted with coconut and topped with fresh blueberries from a locals-only patisserie in Montmartre. See? Sophisticated. Miraval Côtes de Provence Rosé is cut from the same cloth, it has the raspberries and wild strawberries but also a  vibrant acidity that makes it so much more than a sweet wine.

The smell of the surf and a daredevil red

Is there anything better than a day at the beach followed by a downpour? Big drops of rain steam as they hit the hot ground and make the surf wild. That’s the mood (and smell) captured in D.S. & Durga Big Sur After Rain. And what’s the best thing to do when rain hits your holiday? Wait it out with a glass worth savouring. Airlie Bank Pinot Noir is the product of a rule-breaking, boundary-pushing winery. Their small-batch ethos has led to a great deal of creativity, something you’ll want to contemplate as you sip. Luckily, with the atmosphere set with the strike of a match, rather than waiting for the weather to change, you can have your rainy day, whenever you like.

A natural wine and a candle that smells like cut grass

For anyone who loves getting dirty in the great outdoors, even when they're indoors. Vegan and sulphate-free, The Natural Wine Co. Organic Shiraz sets the standard in natural wine. It’s smooth, dry, full-bodied and made with only the good stuff. Boy Smells Gardener Candle is a beeswax candle, hand poured in LA, fragranced to smell like cut grass, bark, honeysuckle and tomatoes still on the vine. This combo will make you feel like you’ve just tended to an acre, even if the extent of your greenery is the olive tree you house in a pot.
