Time to sip something different.

We’re all about a signature drink, but sometimes you’ve just got to shake it up and try something new. So what’s new in beverages? Actually a lot. Boldly flavoured spirits, hemp beer and Willy-Wonka-wild mash-ups: tea-flavoured beer, anyone? Ahead, seven bottles for anyone ready to sip outside their comfort zone.

1. Pink fizz

Unfiltered, fizzy and vegan-friendly, pet nats are going to be hot this summer (but served chilled). Chalmers Pink Fizz is dry, savoury and tart. Notes of pink grapefruit, wild strawberry and pomegranate, come together in a delicious sip. Made mostly from a host of different southern Italian wines: nero d’Avola, sagrantino, falanghina, piedirosso, aglianico and Lambrusco, it definitely feels like the kind of thing you’d drink on the Amalfi Coast.

Try if you love: rosé all day.

2. Coffee tequila

If you pride yourself on your French press but haven’t gotten around a coffee cocktail before, you need to revisit it with Cazcabel Tequila Coffee Liqueur. Made with Barista-approved arabica coffee beans from the coast of Mexico, this coffee liqueur isn’t what you’re used to. It’s honeyed and sweet with an earthy blanco base. Bound to be the inspiration behind some creative home cocktail shaking, but after you’ve become a Cazcabel fan, you’re likely to enjoy it just as much over ice.

Try if: A flat white is the highlight of your morning.

3. Hemp beer

An American style pale ale, named after a goddess from Asian mythology, but brewed in the Yarra Valley, Maku Hemp Session Ale is here to be your first (or favourite) hemp beer. No, hemp beer doesn’t get you high, but it has a unique flavour. Hemp and hops come from the same family of plant, and both provide a bitter flavour. In Maku they are perfectly combined to make something tasty with an earthy after - in the best kind of way.

Try if: You love craft beer or anything CBD.

4. Shochu

Shochu is the national spirit of Japan. If you’ve never tried it, but fancy yourself an adventurous spirit drinker, you’ll want to give it a go. It’s similar to vodka, because it’s distilled from potato, rice or buckwheat, but it’s very different in taste. It actually tastes more like sake, but those who know will tell you that they are two very different drinks. Koyomi Single Distilled Shochu is distilled from barley and its unique flavour is super refreshing over ice. Try it like the Japanese do, as a Chu-Hi: Highball glass, ice, shochu, soda water and a squeeze of lemon.

Try if: Gin is your go-to.

5. Blackberry gin

Flavoured gin has really made its mark, and it isn’t going anywhere. For one main reason, it’s delicious. Tanqueray Blackcurrant Royale Gin is bold and sumptuous. It’s full of juicy blackcurrants mellowed with a vanilla base. If you like tasty, layered drinks, but don’t like a heap of fussing to make them (so much room for error), a flavoured spirit is exactly what you’re looking for. Unless you can hire a personal bartender. In which case, get the bartender and the Tanqueray.

Try if: You usually go with pre-mixed.

6. Rosé/gin hybrid

The French Mirabeau Dry Rosé Gin is a London Dry style gin, but in the making process, Mirabeau Provence Rosé is added to the final macerate before the spirit is distilled, along with botanicals from the region. When you taste the gin, you notice the grapes add a round softness to the mouthfeel. This softness means it’s enjoyable to have solo on the rocks or as a base for your favourite gin cocktails.

Try if: Believe that two things becoming one is twice as fun.

7. Cuppa made a cold one

Usually it’s a cup of tea or a beer, depending on the time of day, but super brewers Pirate Life have teamed up with Dilmah to create one pretty special mash-up. Pirate Life Dilmah Limited Edition pours dark orange with a creamy head of foam. With aromas of stone fruit, bergamot and premium ceylon tea, it’s pleasantly fragrant. A tasty brew, it’s a savoury citrus, bitter in a balanced way with a fine tannic quality and a whole heap of herbals.

Try if: You like the idea of a herb garden in your beer.
