Pop Queens 2024: 7 Perfectly Paired Cocktails Inspired with Iconic Artists - Dan’s Daily | Dan Murphy’s
We’re calling it: 2024 was undoubtedly the year of the pop girlies. Women led the charge, gifting us with some of the best albums we’ve had on repeat all year. You only have to glance at this year’s Grammy noms to see just how much the girls ate: Beyoncé picked up 11 nominations, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX scored seven each, and Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter each nabbed six. It looks like this trend is set to continue well into 2025 – and we're on board.
In honour of these ridiculously talented women doing what they do best, we’ve paired drinks with seven artists who dominated the charts this year. Yeah the girls!
1. Charli XCXIt was a bloody big year for Charli XCX. Her album Brat blessed our ears with genre-bending, hyperpop-meets-EDM deliciousness, and our eyes with an acid-green aesthetic. Looking like an icon, she encouraged us to embrace our inner 365 party girl and perfect the Apple dance on TikTok (the trick was to set the recording speed to 2x (double speed) – clever!). She blew our minds with her Boiler room sets, was our favourite reference and, just when you thought her album couldn’t get any better, she gave us Brat and It's the Same but There's Three More Songs So It's Not and Brat and It's Completely Different but Also Still Brat. Yep, she’s good to us. Naturally, we think the perfect drink to toast this pop queen is a Midori Illusion – neon green, deliciously retro, and ideal for a club sesh or a living room rave. And if you’re feeling inspired, check out our Brat-themed cocktail line-up for more party sips.
2. Ariana Grande
Ari has been busy this year. Not only did she star in the film adaptation of Wicked alongside Cynthia Erivo – which has surpassed Grease as the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical in the US – but she also released her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine. With hits like ‘Yes, And?’ and ‘We Can’t Be Friends’, it showcases an evolution of her overall sound, paired with pretty personal storytelling. For the theatre kids at heart, watching Ari bring the character of Glinda to life on the big screen is nothing short of magical. The press tour for the film is equally enchanting, and yes, we’re still holding space for ‘Defying Gravity’. But for our perfect pairing, we're going for a deep cut. Remember when she released the song 'Pink Champagne' as a surprise thank you to her fans when she hit 10 million Twitter followers in 2013? We're still not over it, so it's Besserat De Bellefon Champagne Rose Brut for us. This top-tier bubbly is not only extremely delicious, its delightfully rosy hue is also a fitting nod to Ari's pretty-in-pink get-up in Wicked.

3. Chappell RoanParty-Starting Pop Queen, Midwest Princess – however you describe her, Chappell Roan’s unapologetic, queer-positive anthems punctuated almost all of our Spotify playlists this year. Her debut album swept us off our feet: those pop-centric hooks! Her ability to be empowering and vulnerable simultaneously! The fact we only spell ‘hot to go’ as H-O-T-T-O-G-O now! That’s not to mention her unmistakable style, which pays homage to drag culture, horror films and burlesque. Iconic, tbh. Take it from us, if you haven’t belted out ‘Pink Pony Club’ at the top of your lungs at the local karaoke joint, you haven’t lived. So, what would Chappell Roan drink? In honour of her track ‘Red Wine Supernova’, we’re suggesting a Kalimotxo. Although it’s simple – literally red wine, Coca-Cola and lemon – it’ll make quite the impression, just like queen Chappell did this year.
4. Billie Eilish Here’s a hot tip: after making a cocktail or two, check out Billie’s annual Vanity Fair interview. Since 2017, the publication has interviewed her every year on October 18, asking the same questions each time. From how her career has evolved to notable life updates, it’s a wholesome moment, especially when Billie watches old footage of her 17-year-old self. Then, of course, there’s her latest album, Hit Me Hard And Soft. Just when you think she can’t smash it out of the park again, she goes and takes us on a sonic journey, one that’s earned her seven well-deserved Grammy nominations. The most streamed song off the album on Spotify is ‘Birds Of A Feather’, so it seems fitting that our Jungle Bird cocktail gets a shoutout. It’s a fun, tiki-inspired tipple featuring Campari and pineapple juice that proves, just like birds of a feather, these two ingredients should stick together.
5. Sabrina Carpenter
When we’re not bringing you the inside word on drinks, we’re working late because we’re a singerrr. Ah, sorry, but how could we not? Sabrina Carpenter dominated the zeitgeist in 2024 and the proof is in the pudding – or should we say espresso? The first single released from her album Short n’ Sweet was the most-streamed song globally this year on Spotify. Get it, girl! We weren’t just listening to her music; we were applying our blush and blow-waving our bangs like her, and getting a closer look at her diamante-encrusted concert outfits, thanks to Vogue. Most of us were also invested in her relationship with Barry Keoghan, and honestly, we knew she foresaw the future with ‘Please Please Please’ – just sayin’. The drink of choice for this 5ft tall queen is, of course, an Espresso Martini, but if you're as busy as Sabrina's been this year then just grab a bottle of Mr Consistent Espresso Martini Mix and add vodka. Isn’t that sweet? We guess so.

6. BeyoncéThis was the year Beyoncé entered her cowboy era, and, in turn, we found ourselves entering our Cowboy Carter era, rhinestone cowboy boots highly encouraged. This album once again proved there’s nothing Queen B can’t do in our books. It's up for 11 Grammy nominations, and she’s the first Black woman to have a number one country hit in the US. Oh, and she was just awarded Billboard’s Artist of the Last 25 Years award. For the cowboy moment, we think the Ranch Water is a perfect fit: a tequila, lime and soda combo that was apparently popular among ranchers in West Texas as a great sipper after a long day’s work on the land. We think it’s the ideal drink to sip while you bootscoot to ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’. You could keep the star-studded theme going by making it with Teremana Blanco by The Rock (sure, he’s not a pop girlie, but we’re sure he’s a Cowboy Carter fan).
7. Taylor SwiftPicture this: it’s February 2024 and more than 369,000 Swifites descend on the MCG and Accor Stadium for what can only be described as the biggest hen’s party you’ve ever attended – if Taylor Swift did hen’s parties, mind you. Will the MCG ever have that much glitter and friendship bracelets in it again? We can only hope. Just like every year, 2024 was a massive one for Taylor. She released The Tortured Poets Department, didn’t release ‘Reputation (Taylor’s Version)’ (it’s okay, we’re patient) and wrapped up her two-year-long Eras tour, which spanned 149 shows across five continents. At the start of the year – probably around the same time we were hand-sewing sequins to our leotards at 1am – everyone went nuts for TayTay’s favourite cocktail, the French Blonde. According to Page Six’s gossip column, she was seen drinking them in a Kansas City restaurant with her girlfriends – guess she’s a grapefruit and dry gin girlie. Heck, she might’ve even had one at the surprise birthday/Eras wrap party that her boyfriend Travis Kelce just threw for her.
