It’s about damn time Lizzo returned to our shores, so turn up the music, turn down the lights and put these drinks on ice.

If, like us, you’ve been praying to the Lizzo gods for her to grace our shores again, you’re in luck – the singer-songwriter-dancer-flautist-actor is landing in Australia imminently. On the agenda? Three huge stadium shows, a Splendour In The Grass set, all her hits, a generous serve of twerking, bedazzled leotards, and we’re sure the flute will make several appearances. On headlining Splendour, Lizzo recently admitted she’s not afraid of a little mud and that she’ll be packing her wellies just like the rest of us festival-goers. See you in the mosh, Lizzo!

Whether you’re enjoying a pre-drink before one of Lizzo’s stadium shows or want to crack a beverage and blast your favourite album to get you amped for Splendour, this line-up of Lizzo’s best tunes paired with the perfect drink really slaps. It’s about damn time we get into it.

‘Good As Hell’ with a lower-alcohol savvy b

In 2019, we were tossing our hair, checking our nails and asking “Baby, how you feelin’?”. The answer? Good as hell, thanks to Lizzo. We still flock to the dancefloor when this one comes on – it’s a classic feel-good tune that’s got us (and our closest pals) through countless break-ups and rough patches. That’s the beauty of Lizzo – she’s always there to tell you to boss up and change your life, and what Lizzo says goes, so we sure as hell will. We’re pairing ‘Good As Hell’ with a glass of South Island White Mist Sauvignon Blanc. Why? Because this New Zealand wine is lower in alcohol (it comes in at 9%) but still tastes good as hell. If you’ve been struggling to find a strong lower-alc contender for your wine glass, go for savvy b. The big tropical fruit characters mean you don't notice the lack of palate weight that comes with a reduction in alcohol. This one offers gooseberry and citrus flavours, so walk your fine ass out the door and buy a bottle of it for your next gals’ night.

‘Special’ with a limited edition hazy pale ale

In case nobody told you today, you’re special. And we think being special should be celebrated, or at the very least paired with a Lizzo song. Fun fact before we get into the matching drink – Lizzo actually wrote more than 200 songs for the Special album! The title song off the record is about how important it is to love ourselves and the people who deserve it. We can’t get enough of its catchy chorus and spotlight on self-love. Ooh, and the film clip of Lizzo as a masked superhero in a bright purple outfit is also excellent. We think the perfect match for this track is another kind of special – a special-edition beer from our friends at Stone and Wood. Their Hinterland Hazy Pale Ale is part of a series brewed using only Australian hops, showcasing the incredible dedication and innovation produced by Australian hop farmers. This hazy pale is low on bitterness with a full-bodied finish – best enjoyed freshly chilled from the fridge. But just like Lizzo tickets, it won’t be around for long, so snap it up soon!

‘Juice’ with a (real) fruity cocktail

Lizzo might sing “I’m like chardonnay, get better over time”, but we think the best match for this bop is Curatif’s Hurricane cocktail in a can. And just like this song, it’s a whole lotta fun. Starting with rum from the master makers at Plantation Rum, passionfruit is then added, sourced from New Zealand, along with fresh Australian lemon juice from the Central Coast. There’s tang, there’s excitement and there’s also a depth of character thanks to that juicy passionfruit. This cocktail ain’t messing around, it contains real fruit leading to a unique texture and taste that needs to be sipped to be believed. It’s safe to say this juice is worth the squeeze.

‘Better In Colour’ with a lilac gin

A song about love in all its forms and a declaration of freedom to be who you want to be, ‘Better In Colour’ is a real mood-lifter. Lizzo recently spoke about the track in an interview, saying “Who cares about that gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or economic background? Spice up life, love is better in colours.” We’re here for it. And we also think drinks are better in colour, too. Enter 23rd Street Distillery’s Violet Gin – it’s like the mood ring of beverages. It’s distilled with traditional juniper and Australian native botanicals like lemon myrtle, cinnamon myrtle, pepperberry, finger lime and wattle seed. As for its neon-like blue tint? That is thanks to the 18 hours the liquid spends steeping alongside butterfly pea flowers. The gin is sensitive to pH and transforms to delicate violet with added acidity such as tonic or lemon. Magic! You’ll never have a G&T the same way again.

‘About Damn Time’ with a highly anticipated whisky

This next Lizzo song and whisky brand have something in common – they’ve both won awards, and rightly so. ‘About Damn Time’ won Record of the Year at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, making Lizzo the first female rapper to win the award. As for Lark Distillery, their 2022 release of Dark Lark took home Whisky of the Year at the Australian Whisky Awards. And ever since it sold out, we’ve been waiting for the 2023 batch of Dark Lark Single Malt Whisky to land in our hot little hands. Now that it has, we can confirm it has the same magical flavour, with a sweet muscat twist. It tastes like bright, fresh tropical fruits laced with freshly baked cookies and subtle oak. It’s a premium single malt that’s light, vibrant and traditionally Lark in style yet deliciously unique.
