Good news everybody, wine pairing isn’t just reserved for Michelin-starred restaurants and Beyoncé (anymore). These days, wine is paired with everything from caviar and lobster to burgs and pizza pies. That’s amore! Even hospo king René Redzepi reopened Noma during Copenhagen’s lockdown (Covid – boo, hiss) to sling burgs and glasses of wine: “We need to heal. So let’s have a glass and a burger. You are all invited.”

Just putting it out there, we reckon some of the best pairings are a good slab of takeaway grease and a premium tasting wine. And what's the most beloved of the takeaway food groups? The humble and delicious burg. So, to start you off on your little wine pairing adventure there’s now a brand new drop that was designed specifically to be eaten with a burger, side-stepping the rules around how we are 'supposed' to enjoy wine in favour of how we actually want to enjoy it. So take a moment of low-key indulgence and kick it up a notch – introducing Greasy Fingers Shiraz.

Greasy Fingers 2021 Shiraz

Who doesn’t love a dense, brooding Shiraz? A beautiful dark purply colour, the Greasy Fingers shiraz is screaming for a hit of junk food. Take a whiff and you’ll get plums, mulberries and chocolate with a subtle vanilla oak finish. In the mouth, there’s a hit of plums and mulberries with a cheeky hint of strawberry jam, soft acid and tannins ending as smooth mocha oak on the palate. This wine was made specifically for a giant, fatty, cheesy, meaty (or not?) burg. Why? The gentle acid of the shiraz cuts through the fattiness of the meat, while those soft sweet, fruit flavours compliment the cheese and red-meat combo nicely. Overall just a giant YUM.

If you think this whole wine and junk food pairing thing could be worth more of a go, have a squiz at some of these pairings as well:

  • Riesling and jalapeno poppers

  • Lambrusco and fairy floss (if you really want a wine with your fairy floss)

  • Cabernet franc and deep-fried cheese

And lastly, we can’t talk about takeaway foods without mentioning everyone’s favourite, pizza. There’s a very special pizza pairing coming from our friends at Greasy Fingers soon, but hush! We’ve already said too much. Coming soon – keep your eyes, ears and mouths open.
