A selection of beer gift ideas for Father's Day

Classic beer for Father’s Day? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Just make sure it’s the perfect one.

Not to generalise, but Dads can be simple creatures. They like what they like, be it John Grisham, lacrosse, Hamilton or the seafood platter at the local bistro. Because they also like you, they might appear enthusiastic when you arrive on Father’s Day and reveal you’ve booked them a live drawing class or bought them a new coffee machine (even though the other one worked just fine). But when they say, “Oh, you shouldn’t have”, they mean it. What they really want to say is, “Oh, sweet child of mine, stop trying to reinvent the wheel.” Give the Dads what they want – just make it the best example of it. If that means beer, this is the list for you.

Below, find seven rock-solid classic beers all sorts of Dads would love to receive this Father’s Day. Even better, every single one of them is at a special price right now just for My Dan’s members.

1. The easygoing pale ale

Tasty and balanced, Mountain Goat Tasty Pale Ale is a mouthful of tropical fruit encased in a barrel-aged and quadruple-hopped treasure chest (figuratively speaking). For all that flavour, this is a beer that remains light and delicately sweet. It’s often recommended as a session beer, and the fact that it’s in a green and gold can also means it’s one of the best beers for any sports fanatic Dads hosting the next Matilda’s game viewing.

Non-member price: $20.99 per six-pack
Member price: $17.99 per six-pack

2. The red ale

Sweet, malty and deliciously creamy, the Kilkenny Red Ale is an Irish legend. Often overlooked for its stouty brother Guinness, the Red Ale has a glorious velvety texture, and, much like Guinness, an iconic white, frothy head (a thing of Irish innovation and beauty). This guy can stand up on its own, but we reckon it goes swimmingly with some bangers and mash – a Dad classic.

Non-member price: $28.99 per six-pack
Member price: $45.99 for two six-packs

3. The XPA

An XPA is like an IPA with the volume turned down. Philter XPA isn’t loud but the melody is magic. Naturally cloudy and easy drinking, it’s refreshing and hoppy with subtle malt and hints of pineapple and peach. A fast favourite from an independent inner-city Sydney brewer, this is innovation and structure with a distinctly retro vibe. If Dad was a ’70s beach babe, one look at the can and he’ll be getting wipeout flashbacks.

Price: $54.99 per case of 16

4. The local lager

An intentionally Aussie beer, CBCo Goldy Lager is brewed longer for a smooth taste and clean finish. Bright and crisp, it makes for very relaxed drinking and conjures images of hot summer days, beachside escapes and long, pretty sunsets. If that sums up where Dad would rather be 99% of the time, tell him it’s a summer holiday in a can.

Non-member price: $22.49 per six-pack
Member price: $20 per six-pack

5. The Japanese lager

Where Australian beers use wheat, Japanese beers use rice, with the result a cleaner, crisper palate. Monsuta Japanese Lager is an elite version of Japanese beer. The hops are soft and the flavour rich and malty, which means it’s the beer of choice for any Dad who prefers tongs in his hands and a station by the barbie at any party, even his own.

Price: $21.99 per six-pack

6. The Mexican lager

Mexico makes all sorts of beer styles, but Australia is particularly enamoured with the light, crisp variety that just begs for a wedge of lime. Modus Cerveza is a primo example of this kind of Mexican-style lager (but made right here at home) – gentle citrus, lightly bodied and a total crowd pleaser. There is something more refined, authentic and polished about Modus compared to other cervezas. Just like when you’re out of bed on a Sunday before 10am, Dad will be impressed.

Non-member price: $20.99 per six-pack
Member price: $19 per six-pack

7. The OG pale ale

Bready, clean and light, Coopers Original Pale Ale is a true classic, responsible for turning the tides away from heavier malty brews of the times. Despite the legacy, this is a pale ale that holds up with the new generation of releases. Balanced, fruity and bitter in all the right ways, it’s an oldie but a goodie. Just like Dad.

Price: $58.95 per case of 24 cans
