12 of the best Black Friday deals on a colourful background

Ooh, baby – we can smell a bargain.

If you've been counting down to the upcoming shopping blitz that is Black Friday, stop the count! The most important day in any shopper’s calendar is here and we're all in on the deals game, yes ma'am. In fact, we’re so in that the Dan Murphy’s Black Friday sale is already live – even though it’s Thursday.

With prices cut, it’s the ideal time to discover a new winery’s take on your favourite drop, fill a hole in your bar cart offering, or stock up for the summer of dinners, hangs and celebrations ahead. Of course, it’s the best possible way to get your Christmas gifts sorted, too. Tick your aunties, boyfriends and besties off the list and save a bucketload while you’re at it – they’ll never know.

Now, Black Friday is madness. If you’re going to survive, you need to go in with a plan, which is exactly what we’ve got for you. We’ve scrolled the Dan Murphy’s Black Friday deals (this was a big job – there are many) and picked out our top 12. Here are the biggest savings on the best drinks so you can take full advantage of the holiday discounts. You’re welcome!

Lanson Black Label Champagne

1. Lanson Black Label Champagne NV France

This non-vintage Champagne is recommended time and time again by those in the know. The sommeliers, bartenders, wine merchants – oh, and our very own wine panel, who gave it a whopping 95 points. Lanson Black Label stands out in the non-vintage Champagne crowd because of its consistent quality, year after year. It has the fine elegant bubbles, a rich lemon curd flavour, and ravishing acidity that will make it a very enjoyable bottle to pull out whenever the occasion calls. And let’s be honest, most occasions call for Champagne.

2. Grant Burge Berryfield Shiraz

Black Friday is the day for bulk buys, which is ideal, given you’ll want to drink this South Australian shiraz again and again. We already recommend this bottle as a great wallet-friendly purchase, but if you buy six in our Black Friday sale, you’ll pay less than 65% of the regular price – insane!

Distinctive for its deep purple colour, long finish, and rich, layered palate of dark cherries, blueberries and hints of pepper, this wine is full-bodied and dry, so a real crowd pleaser for red-wine lovers. Take it to dinner parties, house warmings and your favourite BYO spot.

3. Cupio Pinot Noir Dry Rosé

There’s a heap of South Australian Cupio wines included in the sale – exceptional news – but the Pinot Noir Dry Rosé gets our pick because, well, ‘tis the season. If your rosé preferences sit on the dry end of the spectrum, this is an excellent choice. Yes, it’s pink; yes, it’s pretty; but (more importantly) it’s also nuanced and perfectly balanced. Juicy redcurrant and raspberry notes are countered by a slight minerality, subtle creaminess and natural acidity. This crisp drop is a smart summer buy – particularly at almost half its usual price.

4. Fire & Ice Solid Gold Vodka

This is the Swiss distillery’s top-shelf vodka, hence why the bottle is gold. It’s very smooth, rich and clean – must be that alpine water. If you’ve never tried it, but are part of the vodka appreciation club, it will be a decidedly welcome addition. It’s a vodka that will do nicely in your celebratory Cosmopolitans this summer, as well as your vodka tonics, Martinis and Bloody Marys, so, at almost 25% off, it’s worth stocking up.

1800 Añejo Tequila

5. 1800 Añejo Tequila

This is a really nice tequila. We recommend it as a killer gift for a top-tier friend or family member who you might find hard to buy for – a delicious bottle is always appreciated – on receipt as well as when they drink it. And when you pride yourself on your gift-giving, the gifts that make them thank you twice are real winners. Not all tequila is made equal, but the 1800 Añejo uses Blue Weber agave picked at its peak, before ageing it in French oak barrels for eight to 12 years. A bit of insider intel for you: if you don’t have a tequila drinker on your to-gift list, this makes a nice summer transition for Scotch drinkers.

6. Rocca Di Montemassi Imperiale Gin

This bottle is a superb example of Italian gin, hailing from the chic coastal region of Maremma in Tuscany. Like most great craft gins, it’s made with local botanicals, but when the juniper, elderflower, chamomile, bergamot and elderflower come from this region, they have a boldness that's worth writing home about. It’s these strong characteristics that make Imperiale Gin such a brilliant addition to your home bar cart, especially if you’re used to drinking Australian gins (also delicious, but different). Take advantage of the discount and do a comparison tasting with some of your local favourites – it’s a treat to taste the Maremma terroir, so to speak.

White Claw Blackberry can

7. White Claw Surge Blackberry Seltzer 6.5% cans

Summer and White Claws go hand in hand. It’s never a bad idea to have some ready in the fridge, and this sale is the perfect time to diversify your seltzer tastes. The White Claw Blood Orange is also on sale, but we’re particularly fond of the Blackberry. It gives the typically light drink a deeper, delicious flavour, which is nice when you want something a little tastier rather than refreshing, though it still is, of course, very refreshing. It’s a seltzer, after all.

8. ALTD Spirits Green Grocer Non-Alcoholic Spirit

This micro-batch distillery in Sydney’s inner west picked up a gold medal in the Australian Alcohol-Free Producer of the Year category at last year’s New York International Spirits Competition. A gin alternative, Green Grocer is one of several in the ALTD range (the Golden Emperor is also on sale) and all are made with top-notch Aussie botanicals for a smooth, premium taste. If you’ve got some non-drinkers coming for Christmas dinner, this is an excellent pick-up. You can offer them a mocktail rather than, you know, water.

SOFI spritz mixed pack

9. SOFI Aperitivo Limited Edition mixed pack 6 x 750mL

Creating the perfect Spritz relies on a careful balance of flavours. For a modern spin, no one is doing it better than SOFI. This Black Friday, we highly recommend you stock up for Spritz season with these sophisticated bottles designed for an Aussie take on aperitivo hour. It’s impossible to choose our favourite from the range, so luckily there’s a mixed pack on sale featuring all six. In it, you’ll find such gems as the Pink Grapefruit and Lavender, Wild Strawberry and Finger Lime, and Native Lemon and Pepperberry – all with zero added sugar.

They’re made from what SOFI refers to as ‘grape spirit’ – essentially an aromatised wine, much like vermouth. But it’s the use of locally sourced fruits, florals, herbs and spices that sets SOFI apart. They sit on the bittersweet end of the spectrum, with easy-drinking as their definite MO. Just mix with prosecco and soda for the Spritz of your dreams.

10. Colli Morenici Frizzante Bianco Doc

Ooof! Made from 100% chardonnay grapes from Italy’s Lake Garda, this light, semi-sparkling vino is absolutely on our shopping list. The only thing that would make this more delightful would be sipping it in Italy. This floral and fruity blend is well balanced with acidity and minerality working in harmony with the flavours. With a fragrance of crisp apple, pear and lime, it makes a perfect case for being the drink served up on arrival. Cue delighted guests.

11. Storytellers Distillery Volume 1: Australian Dry Gin

FYI, this bottle is converting people to gin. Blame the cool bottle, the native Australian botanicals that flavour it, or the ethos of the brand (storytelling is at the heart of our country) – whatever the case, their Australian Dry Gin is getting top reviews. Tableland Strawberry Gum is one of the key flavours in the mix, so drink it with sparkling water with a fresh strawberry garnish. Unique, no?

12. Organic Hill South Australian Preservative Free Organic Sparkling Rosé

Do we have two South Australian rosés on our list? Yes, and for good reason. People have done some interesting things with rosé in recent times, and if you haven’t dabbled for a few summers, this is the year to rediscover it. This Organic Sparkling Rosé from Organic Hill is a perfect example. Made from lagrein grapes, its flavours are of earthy beetroot, fresh guava and watermelon, rather than the usual sweet berries. It has a great dry finish, but still plenty of sweetness – plus bubbles. It means rather than a brunch-y aperitivo wine, it’s a great dinner drop, particularly with spicy Asian flavours. Book your fave Sichuan BYO, text your foodie gang and tell them you’ve got drinks covered.
