To celebrate World Moscato Day, we round up seven of the best ones to try.

People tend to have strong opinions about moscato. Some still see it as an outdated ‘basic’ wine that’s only enjoyed by nannas at the local RSL, while others dismiss it as being too sweet, thanks to its high sugar content. Moscato can divide experienced wine lovers and beginners alike, but we don’t mind a good wine debate. It would be dead boring if we all agreed on what makes one wine better than another.

What people might not know, however, is that moscato has come a long way. Over the past 20 years or so, there’s been a shift in how this wine is produced and perceived. Winemakers have been working to elevate the style, focusing on more refined techniques and higher-quality grapes, with an emphasis on preserving the fresh, fruity qualities while tempering the sweetness. It’s now also often produced in organic and sustainable ways, appealing to modern drinkers.

Moscato is a textbook example of how a wine can be modernised and find new relevance. Once dismissed as overly sweet and old fashioned, this naturally lower-in-alcohol wine is being reimagined into crisp, lightly sparkling styles that are both fresh and versatile. Moscato also pairs well with various dishes, so bring a bottle to your next catch-up and enjoy a glass alongside something spicy, a cheese platter or a fruity dessert. Just be sure to serve it super chilled to enjoy it at its best.

On that note, here are seven moscatos to put on your radar, from the reliable ones we keep coming back to, plus a few new favourites on the scene. And with World Moscato Day happening on May 9, it’s a pretty good excuse to revisit this underrated wine.

1. Brown Brothers Moscato

Starting with a classic, well-known drop, this is from the Australian family-owned winemakers who are all about producing moscato that’s approachable and refreshing. Their classic moscato is a light, sweet and slightly spritzy white wine known for its signature floral aroma, fresh grape and musk notes. The palate is bright and juicy with flavours of sherbet, citrus and a touch of tropical fruit – all balanced by a refreshing acidity that stops it from feeling syrupy. Its low ABV (around 5.5%) makes it an easy choice for casual sipping – whether it’s enjoyed on its own or paired with a spicy Asian dish of your choice.

2. Tread Softly Moscato

Our next moscato from Tread Softly is made in a fresh style and comes with a commitment to environmental responsibility – a perfect pairing. For every case sold, Tread Softly plants an Australian native tree, contributing to nearly two million trees planted to date. This moscato is bright and fruity, with vibrant aromas of tropical fruit, musk and orange blossom. Lightly sparkling, it delivers sweet citrus flavours on the palate, balanced by a refreshing, cleansing acidity. We can just picture it now: sipping a glass of this (chilled), helping yourself to another hunk of brie, and feeling like a hero knowing you’re looking out for Mama Earth.

This moscato has a sweet and fruity aroma with hints of apricot, lemon and light floral notes, finished in a smooth, sweet citrus flavour complemented by nectarine and a touch of lychee. 6. Zonzo Estate Moscato

According to the winemakers at Zonzo Estate in the Yarra Valley, this is a moscato made for picnics and parties – sounds right up our alley. It has a lovely rose-petal pink hue, bursting with fresh aromas of ripe peach, nectarine and orange. 7. Vietti Moscato dAsti CascinettaMoscato d'Asti Cascinetta is a lightly sparkling wine from Italy's Piedmont region, the home of moscato. In other words, this is a great wine if you want to know what moscato should taste like. Expect a fresh, aromatic nose with notes of ripe peaches, apricots, pears and rose petals, plus a hint of candied ginger. On the palate, it’s sweet and refreshing, with apricot and a balanced acidity, – the kind of wine that can be sipped and savoured on its own, or paired with fruity or creamy desserts or even blue cheese. Hungry? Us too. Better grab a bottle and head to your local deli, stat.
