Holding a glass of red wine

The Barossa is rightly famous for its shiraz, but there are so many other great wines to try, too.

When it comes to Aussie wine regions, the Barossa Valley is often one of the first to spring to mind. This celebrated South Australian region has long been a household name, even for people who don’t think they know much about wine. The Barossa isn’t our oldest region – the Hunter Valley in New South Wales wears that crown – but it has a proud history of producing distinctive, quality wines stretching back about 180 years.

So, what’s the big deal with Barossa Valley wines? Thanks to its warm climate, rich soils and generations of know-how, this region is especially famous for its signature shiraz. Rich, fruit-driven and lightly spiced, they are some of Australia’s best-loved wines, both here and overseas, but Barossa producers make plenty of different shiraz styles, too. There’s also so much more to the region than just one grape variety – many other benchmark reds, whites and rosés are made here, too. This place also knows how to deliver serious value. No wonder it’s so famous.

If you’re keen to try some of the best Barossa Valley wines, we’ve pulled together a diverse selection that reflects a range of producers, varieties and styles, and they’re all capped at around $25 a bottle. At these prices – some even sit below $10 – there’s no excuse not to try something new.

Barossa whites & rosésThe Barossa Valley may be famous for its red wines, but don’t skip its whites and rosés. There is plenty to love across these wines as you’ll see from this selection, including a rich chardonnay, a grenache-based rosé and even a picpoul for something different, which will especially suit anyone who loves riesling. Pair one of these bottles with good friends, sunshine and excellent snacks.
Barossa shirazBarossa shiraz. Two words that get most red-wine fans pretty excited – and for good reason. These wines are some of our greatest exports as well as being among the most popular wine styles for Aussies, too. Think rich, bold, fruit-driven and spiced, and with a choice of shiraz all at about $25 and well under, these are big-time overachievers. Take any one of these bottles to a barbecue this summer and you can expect to be invited back.
Barossa cabernet sauvignon Like shiraz, cabernet sauvignon shines in the Barossa Valley. If you’re into rich, dark-fruited, structured red wines, you’ll want to bookmark this selection. From the bargain that is Jacob’s Creek (it ticks all the varietal boxes for less than $10) to the Grant Burge, there’s a choice of styles here. But all are going to work a treat next to a grilled steak or even a burger with the lot.
Barossa grenache & blendsGrenache has a very happy home in many of South Australia’s wine regions, McLaren Vale especially, but the Barossa Valley also makes some brilliant expressions. And when combined with the region’s famous shiraz and standout mourvèdre, it makes some of the most compelling red blends coming out of the state. Again, these are brilliant barbecue wines, but they’re also going to suit a host of other meaty, earthy and spiced dinners.
Other Barossa red winesThe Barossa Valley is no one-trick pony, and these red wines prove the point. From tempranillo, which loves the region’s warm conditions, and malbec that will appeal to anyone who loves big reds to smooth merlot that’s a dream food wine, there’s plenty to explore in this selection They are all perfect choices to take to any upcoming event for something a little bit different.
