Kind of like a wine bar but for gin, Threefold impresses as soon as you enter to find an array of original gins ready to be poured by some of the country’s best bartenders.

Ambience at Threefold Distilling
Why you goLet’s face it, aside from the rare times you need to pick up a mate on the way to the airport, there aren’t many reasons to visit Glenelg in winter. The Blackpool Pleasure Beach of Adelaide, this coastal suburb’s charm always feels a little distant without ice-cream trickling down your sunburnt arm as you stroll towards the ferris wheel casting its cheerful shadow over hordes of city-dwellers looking for a dip closer to home. But recently we’ve found an all-seasons reason to visit in the form of Threefold Distilling – a neat suburban gin distillery housed in an industrial warehouse just down from Maccas on Anzac Highway. It’s a lofty space, starkly dressed, with tinfoil insulation on the ceilings, an infrared heater, pretty pot plants and very fine bar staff working overtime to warm things up. Even with four-degree winds blowing in from the Saint Vincent Gulf, the bar – tasting room meets suburban hangout – feels cosy and inviting.
Why you stayIt’s kinda like a wine bar, but for gin. Threefold’s impressive classic, seasonal and experimental takes are ranked handsomely in tidy rows behind the bar, their minimalist branding immediately eye-catching. Mix in a warm, genuine greeting on arrival, and the tone is set for service and drinks that surpass expectations. We love the fruit-forward cocktails – who wouldn’t want to dive into a long sipper of clarified Earl Grey tea, raspberry gin and orange so criminally smashable it’s gone before you know it?
What drink to orderUnsurprisingly, gin’s the order of the day. A flight might include the juniper-forward London dry (distilled with oats for a richer mouthfeel), a citrusy Mediterranean-inspired number and a little GSM (grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre gin) sweetener to finish. There are perfectly paired gin and tonics, which the owners have spent many nights refining. And the “not gin” section highlights South Australian greats from the wine and beer worlds.

What to pair it withWith no working kitchen (yet), Threefold’s brief menu is snack-focused and crowd-pleasing. That isn’t a dig – what’s not to love about a grazing lunch of Olasagasti anchovies, Sicilian olives and cheeses smooshed into generous wedges of soft ciabatta? The very best indoor picnic. Threefold is due to expand its tasting room later this year, and with it the food offering will extend to smoky, cheesy pizzas.

Why we love itThreefold is at once detailed and effortless, and little touches go a long way towards turning a vibe that could very easily be a bit boardroom into something more inviting. Things like nicely carved and brand-stamped ice, and tumblers with a stylish lip seem to make everything taste a bit more special. The service is attentive without being overbearing. The chairs have backs. It’s everything you want, and nothing you don’t.
Regular’s tipAn ambling 12.6km cycle path snakes between Glenelg and central Adelaide, its bends revealing a charming snapshot of the area that even locals sometimes miss. Typically beginning at Glenelg jetty, it’s also possible to start or end your ride at Threefold (there are bike racks out the front) with just a slight detour. The ride takes a couple of leisurely hours to complete, and we think it’s one of Adelaide’s best half-days out – just add a little gin to ease weary limbs.
Don’t leave withoutIt would be remiss to leave without stocking up your at-home bar with a couple of bottles. The London dry – arguably Threefold’s best gin – is perfect for DIY MartinisNegronis and other cocktails. The Frontignac gin – using grapes from Balhannah fortified in the still – offers notes of nashi pear, honey and crisp apple. And, if you can get your hands on it, a Christmassy cherry-flavoured gin (released once a year) is a real treat. But get in quick – last year Threefold distilled only 334 bottles, which sold out in three days.
Make it fancyBall out on a monthly cocktail masterclass for you or a friend, or both. Each class is based on a different theme, be it a night in the tropics, Italy’s limoncello liqueur, or a seasonal fruit. Tickets are $75 per person and include snacks, two cocktails and a two-hour workshop with an industry pro.

Who to takeWhile an easy afternoon drink certainly works here, the space is ideal for functions. And Threefold has form in the game, offering cocktail masterclasses with some of Australia’s best bartenders, drinks with the distillers for those wanting to expand their gin knowledge, and corporate events such as team-building workshops or, if you’re no longer WFH, let them come to you for an in-office tasting.
