A tiny hole-in-the-wall bar in a Melbourne-esque laneway with an equally diminutive offering of excellent drinks and snacks.

Why you go If you have a hankering for a cool cocktail on a Tuesday night – and, no, we’re not judging – the pickings are rather slim in Darwin city unless you head for a pub. A somewhat more stylish option is to get along to Spain Place. Here, you’ll find old favourite Stone House and, as of 2022, Poco Bar (open Friday and Saturday nights too, of course). Little, or poco if you speak  Spanish, is kind of the theme here. Neat planter boxes corral tables and bistro chairs into a narrow strip – al fresco, but topped with a long black-and-white striped awning – and the menu is equally diminutive: five cocktails, five white wines, five reds, five beers and five drink-friendly snacks. The drinks and dishes rotate every couple of weeks, but you can trust they will be excellent – Poco Bar is the new baby of Moorish Café’s serial award-winners Gertrude Knight and Marc Wagnon.
Why you stay Poco Bar is Darwin’s first and only hole-in-the-wall bar, but what a wall. Spain Place, once an unprepossessing delivery and rubbish zone, is now a buzzy little tributary to groovy Austin Lane. The teensy tiled bar sits like a jewel against artfully graffitied brick, while across Spain Place is the serious heritage masonry of Stone House wine bar, and to the left is the fairy-lit Stone House garden and the restaurants of Austin Lane. It all feels a bit Melbourne – minus the suits and the all-black vibes.

What drink to orderBecause the menu changes every couple of weeks, it’s not possible to make a specific recommendation. That said, the five cocktails that appear at the top of the menu will be sound choices. Ask for a suggestion and the bar staff will point you towards one you’re bound to love – perhaps the Liquid Luck, a combo of Ink gin, elderflower, rosemary, lemon and aquafaba (the whipped chickpea foam that’s a vegan-friendly stand-in for egg white) or the freshness-in-a-glass North-East Side: Tanqueray gin, green Chartreuse, elderflower, sage, cucumber, mint and lime. And although the beers are mostly Australian (including, sometimes, an Alice Springs brew), the wine list might take you to France, Spain or Portugal via the Clare Valley, McLaren Vale or Margaret River.
What to pair it withIf chicken-liver pâté is on the menu, order it. Looking like a scoop of silken dark-chocolate mousse, it’s rich and smooth – all the better to pair with crisp golden toast and pickled vegetables. Like the drinks, the snacks change regularly. And, as with the dishes at sister venue Moorish, they’re all thoughtfully chosen and well-executed. Other options appearing on the menu since Poco Bar opened have been boiled quail egg and local radishes with cumin salt, white anchovies, and a Spanish plate showcasing jamón, salami, mortadella and truffle Manchego cheese.

Why we love it Spain Place is a thoroughfare for people going out for dinner, workers heading home and retailers shutting up shop for the day, making Poco Bar a great place to observe a slice of Darwin life, cocktail in hand.
Regular's tipDarwin’s dry season (May to September) is a lovely time to be outdoors, with clear skies and cool breezes. If you visit Poco Bar outside those months, you’ll be taking your chances with the weather, but the rain usually doesn’t last long. Huddle up, wait it out, and maybe order another drink.
Don’t leave without

Making a plan to come back in a few nights. The Tuesday night vibe is very different to Saturday night. Even better, if you can, make a plan to come back in a few weeks – the cocktails, wines and food choices will have changed, and you can be sure it will all still be great.
