There’s a touch of retro Mediterranean chic in the mix at this sharply detailed wine bar in downtown Burleigh Heads with a deep list of European labels and stellar snacks.

paloma bar
Why you goThis may not be the glitter strip you expect of the southern stretch of the Queensland coast, but odds are it’ll be a version you’ll fall for fast. Welcome to the Gold Coast 2.0. Paloma’s owners, Karla and Alex Munoz Labart, are the clever duo who created Labart, the Coast’s top smart-casual restaurant. But you don’t need to know the background of this bustling bar to appreciate the quality of what it has on offer – top-notch Euro-centric wines and a tight list of smart snacks. Set on Burleigh Heads’ James Street, the busy hub of this evolving neighbourhood, groovy Paloma opened in December 2021 and has been simply and stylishly ticking every box since. At heart, it’s an elevated reimagining of a local wine bar that anyone would welcome in their ’hood. And if Burleigh isn’t part of your neck of the woods, you’ve now got an excellent excuse to visit this charming beachside locale. Just remember it’s walk-ins only, so at wine o’clock – anywhere between 4:00pm and 8:00pm – you’ll probably have to wait a short while to nab a seat.
Why you stay

It could just be the name – “paloma” means dove in Spanish – but there’s a touch of retro Mediterranean chic in the mix here. There’s a fab on-trend by-the-glass wine range – anything from Austrian riesling, Loire Valley sauvignon blanc and Aussie natural sparkling to skin-contact wines such as Gentle Folk’s Rainbow Juice. On the brass-accented back bar you’ll spot a tight line-up of spirits, too, but first and foremost Paloma is a bar dedicated to the pleasures of wine – and ultra-tasty small plates.

The décor leans European, neatly sidestepping worn-out coastal formulas. It’s a spot that feels airy during the day, whether in the long, narrow interior or at the alfresco tables, and is flatteringly lit at night, with a lovely bar clad in pastel marine-hued tiles stretching almost the length of the venue. It’s typical of the thinking here that above the padded-leather banquette along the opposite wall is a mirror positioned French bistro-style to ensure everyone has something good to look at. Out front, smart terrazzo tiling provides a jazzy counterpoint to a classic all-white exterior.

Paloma drink
What drink to orderA cool glass of Chablis could be the ticket for those who like to keep it classic. For something different, try Foradori’s Lezèr from Italy, a summery light red wine, served properly chilled, and a tasty place to start. The list of wines by-the-glass is deep, so you’ll be forced into some tough choices. And it pays to be read the drinks list carefully, so maybe order a cocktail while you decide. There’s a handful of house-crafted options along with the best-loved classics – Negroni, anyone? Feeling the heat after a spell on the beach? Experiment with a twist on Mexico’s popular Paloma cocktail, which puts a rosemary-steeped tequila to work with grapefruit and white vermouth. Or order a pre-batched thirst-quencher such as the Watermelon Spritz, its sweet fruitiness balanced by native peppermint gum, vodka and tangy verjus. Fans of natural European wines will enjoy the exciting likes of Italy’s Radikon wines and Le Facteur’s Extra Brut Chenin Blanc from France’s Loire Valley.
What to pair it withWould it be cheating to say just order one of everything? The quality of the snacks at Paloma is stellar. The menu changes regularly and specials pop up weekly. If it’s on the menu when you visit, try the lobster sandwich, with crisp shoestring fries adding crunch to the rich filling sandwiched in a bouncy bun. Or channel your last trip to Paris and hoover up the steak frites, the beef slathered in peppercorn sauce. On the lighter side, you can’t go wrong with Spanish-style plump marinated anchovies on toast with red peppers and Italy’s creamy stracciatella cheese, while the baguette with caramelised butter makes first-rate snacking teamed with a plate of sliced dry-cured saucisson sausage and cornichons.

Regular’s tipTucked right at the back of the room is a compact seating area that’s perfect when you want to be a bit less on view than at those coveted outdoor tables. Also good to know: if you’re dining at Labart and want to end the evening with a nightcap at Paloma, let the waitstaff know – they’ll do their best to make it happen.
Who to takePaloma attracts a truly diverse crowd – the great by-the-glass wine list makes it a favoured spot for glam group catch-ups and post-beach pre-dinner get-togethers. For a bit less buzz, drinks after 8pm are best for quieter chats with significant others.
