Come to nab a spot on the rooftop, stay for cocktails made with equal parts fun and finesse, and for sandwiches to write home about.

Bar interiors
Why you goSydneysiders know rooftop bars are relatively thin on the ground in their city, especially compared with their neighbours south of the border, so in Old Mate’s Place – set high up in the skyline, four flights of stairs up – there’s already good reason to cheer. But when a bar in this sort of lofty setting has drinks this good, staff this dedicated and food this delicious, it calls for a full-blown celebration. And the team at Old Mate’s Place is here to help you do it. Sure, the main bar presents as an old-fashioned library, with leather booths, book-lined shelves, candlelight and plenty of heavy wood around the place, but this is a special kind of library where the people in charge aren’t shushing you, they’re handing you a drink and turning the music up. Head upstairs, and find a lush rooftop surrounded by skyscrapers and greenery, complete with an extra bar and tables made for catching up with old friends or meeting new ones. All this in an unassuming CBD office building. Happy days.
Why you stayGetting a spot on the roof is reason enough to hang around, as is waiting for one, but upstairs or down, the team behind the bar here sure know how to fix a drink. Classics are made with all the skill and expertise you could ask for, while signatures combine good taste with good ideas and the occasional cheeky addition. Where else is a bar going to garnish your pitch-perfect Bloody Mary with instant noodles and their seasoning? Or take a base of vodka and cranberry then jazz it up with Thai basil and bay leaves? There’s plenty more where that came from, with a short, sharp list of beer and wine, and a snacks menu that starts small – think warm olives or fried lotus-root chips with Mexican spices – then moves into a section centred around Philly cheesesteaks, Philadelphia’s signature steak and cheese sandwich.
Appetizers
What drink to orderHere to drink? You should be. But what to choose? Why not grab a quick VB twist-top while you look over the menu, then explore the signature cocktails? The Melody, a refreshing mix of gin, sake, sherry, watermelon and lemon, is just the right kind of opener. Follow it up with a Baker’s Dozen, which takes whisky infused with croissants – yep, croissants – then serves it over a big block of ice with fancy sugar and bitters. If an Old Fashioned crossed with the world’s greatest pastry sounds like your kind of party, then this is one drink you really shouldn’t miss.
What to pair it withThere’s a well put-together cheese and charcuterie board that’s perfect for sharing, but when the chips are down, there’s only one thing to do: order up a round of cheesesteaks and have at it. The signature plays it just the way they do in Philly, with sirloin steak served on a soft roll with roasted capsicum, onion and melted provolone cheese, pickle and crisps on the side. But there’s range here. Go the vego option, sink your teeth into a spicy Portuguese-chicken number or get around a jamon version that brings cured Spanish ham into the mix. Just keep your napkin close at hand.
Why we love itFor a city with such good weather, great Sydney rooftop bars are few and far between, so Old Mate’s would score points just for giving it a crack. But this is a proper bar run by some of the city’s most experienced operators, the rooftop just happens to be the cherry that sits (literally) on top.
Who to takeKnock off early and race up the stairs – all hundred of them – with your workmates to secure a spot under the sun (Old Mate’s opens at four, after all), sink some beers and share some cheesesteaks. Or ride the lift up with that special someone, sink into a corner spot lit by candles, and enjoy some of the best cocktails in town. The choice is yours.
