Why you goFirst things first: the bar’s name is pronounced “MA-mooch”. It’s an Italian word for mother and speaks to the warmth and welcoming nature of this intimate neighbourhood bar. Opened by the crew behind family-friendly pizzeria Monsterella a few doors up, Mummucc’ was designed as a holding station for the main event, but quickly outgrew its status as just an understudy. After all, what’s not to love about a clubby room where delicious wines and cocktails flow freely, and emerging cooking talent delivers imaginative pasta, delicious grilled things on skewers and other big-flavoured small plates? Even if just for the night, here guests get to experience a taste of the good life.
Why you stayMummucc’s address might be in Perth’s inner west, but you could transplant this handsome house of marble and concrete to Milan, Rome or any other cosmopolitan Italian city and the bar would feel totally at home. It’s also a safe bet that the locals would feel the same, courtesy of bar staff who nail the casual-professional style of service. The energy and volume of the room – part spirited conversation among guests, part groovy Italo-disco soundtrack – make Mummucc’ the sort of party everyone wants to be part of. The Italian-leaning menu and drinks list, meanwhile, make this party difficult to leave.

What drink to orderKick off your visit the Italian way with an aperitivo – an Aperol or Limoncello Spritz, perhaps, or the Australiano, the bar’s take on a classic pre-dinner drink, the Americano, made with only Australian ingredients. From there, it’s on to the wine list where Italian and European winemakers rule. In addition to pouring lively sparkling prosecco and juicy chilled Italian red wines by the glass, Mummucc’ also highlights West Australian winemakers such as Sam Vinciullo and Local Weirdos who find inspiration in European winemaking traditions. Italian favourites like feisty grappa and bitter amaro liqueur, and other digestivos are on hand to finish the night, while thoughtful non-alcoholic mixed drinks ensure everyone can join in the fun.
What to pair it with While some are content grazing on bread, cheese and cured meats, getting the full Mummucc’ experience requires taking chef Matt McDonald’s Italian-ish menu for a spin. This isn’t a tough ask, especially since untraditional pastas – trenette with duck sausage and burnt leek, or angel-hair spaghetti with prawns and a spicy salami sauce – work equally well shared with friends or as a satisfying meal for one. Delicious proteins (oversized tiger prawns, for instance, and Black Angus sirloin) grilled over charcoal are another kitchen hallmark, the steak doubling as a perfect excuse to explore some of the cellar’s heftier red wines.

Regular’s tipWant to enjoy Mummucc’ with a pet or simply want to watch life on Grantham Street pass you by? Arrive as close to opening time as possible to nab one of the four outdoor tables – they’ve been cleverly built into a concrete bench out front and can comfortably sit two people side-by-side with a pet or two underfoot. While Mummucc’s food is part of the bar’s appeal, it’s reassuring to know you can order one of Monsterella’s excellent wood-fired pizzas and eat it in the bar. Finally, the bar’s takeaway licence means you can take home a bottle of that lovely vermentino or tempranillo you had with dinner – a fine way to extend that Mummucc’ experience that little bit longer.
Who to takeAlthough there’s one large communal table in the bar, most of the real estate here is designed for couples and smaller groups. That’s not to say you can’t bring a posse – unfailingly charming staff will make it work, even if crowding everyone around one or a couple of the bar’s bistro tables is going to be a bit of a squeeze – but Mummucc’ seems calibrated for date nights, dinner with another couple, and catch-ups with friends. At the very least, rocking up with a smaller group will greatly increase your chances of getting a table, although (happy days!) the bar now accepts a limited number of bookings.
