A hidden entry in a back street is the portal to a fun bar, restaurant and lantern-filled terrace where bespoke gin is poured alongside menus brimming with Top End flavours.

Why you goIn an art-filled laneway in Darwin’s CBD, there’s a roller door. Behind the roller door, there’s a lift. Take the lift to the first floor and prepare to be impressed by the bar, restaurant and distillery before you. Yes, Charlie’s of Darwin is all three, and it’s a winning combo. In fact, The Telegraph in the UK put it at number 18 on its 2021 list of the top 20 bars to visit in the world, alongside venues in London, Hong Kong and Berlin. Owner Rebecca Bullen, founder of Melbourne’s Cohen Cellars and Darwin’s Stone House wine bar, has turned her attention to gin, using locally grown and foraged botanicals to create unique blends through the Darwin Distillery Co. Her Darwin Signature Gin, appropriately labelled with a crocodile, includes Kakadu plum, water lilies and native lemongrass, all sustainably harvested within a three-hour drive of Darwin. Her Salty Plum Gin is bright orange and includes an actual salty plum – a quintessentially Territorian childhood treat. And if you happen to find yourself in the Qantas International London Lounge, you may well be served this gin – or save your money and fly to Darwin instead.
Why you stayThere are so many ways to enjoy Charlie’s. Have a cocktail and a snack at the bar next to the distillery. Gather a gang to lounge on the leather and velvet sofas behind fringed curtains in one of the private rooms. Book a table and work through the Feed Me menu featuring the likes of lemon myrtle tempura barramundi and pork belly with smoked chilli salsa, perhaps with the suggested matching gins or, if you prefer, with complementary wines. Take the conversation out onto the Raintree Lantern Terrace, an alfresco area overlooking Raintree Park and offering snacks, drinks and a cigar menu. The outdoor area is especially lovely during Darwin’s dry season (May to September), when the nights are cool and clear.

What drink to orderThe Salty Plum Martini, one of owner Bec’s favourites, is a must: it pairs the vibrant Salty Plum Gin with two vermouths and is garnished with, of course, a salty plum.
What to pair it withBec recommends a serve of crocodile dumplings with Davidson’s plum and Sichuan numbing oil as an excellent match for the Salty Plum Martini.
Why we love itThe Feed Me menu changes monthly, and has a stronger focus on seasonality than you’ll find pretty much anywhere else in Darwin. Chef Fendi is a regular at the Rapid Creek markets and is determined to use local produce where he can. The Feed Me menu therefore features dishes such as torched coral prawn with finger lime and an amuse-bouche of custard apple sorbet. There are options for vegetarians, vegans, pescatarians and those who eschew dairy, gluten or seafood. At $60 for six small courses, it’s great value – and best to book.
Don’t leave withoutA trip to the bathroom takes you past a wall of Charlies: Prince Charles, of course; Charlie Sheen, flipping us all the bird; Charlie Brown; a poster for a school production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; Charlie Chaplin, and, perhaps Darwin’s most famous Charlie, the character who owned and ran Charlie’s Italian Restaurant, notorious as the lunchtime haunt of the once-powerful Country Liberal Party.
Make it fancyYou can make it as fancy as you like. Sign up for a gin-blending class and flex your inner gin distiller. For $150 per person, you can spend an afternoon tasting, creating and blending your own gin recipe and you’ll go home with a 500ml bottle of your own special concoction.
