This buzzing beer hall, with limited-edition craft beers and fun Japanese snacks, is a winner for post-work drinks, date nights, and the dog-loving crowd.

Why you go

On a sunny day, Benchwarmer’s tables on the footpath and in the back beer garden are hot property. On a winter’s night, groups head inside the 135-year-old building and gather around the fireplace under the glow of red and purple lights. Whatever the weather, the combination  of unexpected international and local beers paired with Japanese-style snacks is a crowd-pleaser. Beyond the wall of fridges stocked deep with craft beers, nine taps feature rotating brews, from Tokyo to California, including exclusive collaborations with breweries.

The orange booths down the back of the bar are great for a date, and a good spot to watch the kitchen pumping out the sorts of dishes you’d find at Japan’s casual izakaya bars. Pair a pint with snacks such as karaage fried chicken, roasted cabbage with seaweed butter, or anything from the section of the menu dedicated to “things on sticks”.

Inside and out, Benchwarmer is dog friendly (there’s even a dedicated Instagram account to the @doggosofbenchies).

Why you stay

This is  approachable neighbourhood eating and drinking at its best. Score a table outside in the sun and the friendly staff will find you a beer you’d never think to order and get the small bites flowing. Before you know it, a few hours have passed and a few more friends have joined your table. The menu is a choose-your-own-adventure affair according to your hunger levels. You might get a couple of plates of edamame or seaweed fries before heading to a dinner reservation elsewhere, or leave it up to the kitchen and go with the daily bar-snack selection.

Benchwarmer is one of the few places in Melbourne to have chocolate-fudge stouts from Hong Kong and ginger ale sours from New York one week, and a Japanese black lager and a barrel-aged cherry sour ale from Melbourne the next.

What drink to orderThe beer hall only stocks limited-release beers, so you’ll probably try a new brew on every visit from craft brewers such as Banks Brewery in Victoria, Verdant Brewing Company from Cornwall in the UK, and Hong Kong’s Yardley Brothers. The beers in the fridge are available to take away or drink in for $3 corkage – that fee is dropped  on Wednesdays – while you can choose any five beers for your own tasting paddle. If beer’s not your thing, a changing range of Australian natural wines are on pour by the glass and bottle, and there’s a also handful of Japanese drinks, including a Sake Negroni.
What to pair it withThere’s something deeply satisfying about beer paired with chicken, and it features in a few of chef Keng-hao Chiu’s dishes. The menu runs from small snacks through to more substantial dishes, but the star here is yakitori, aka things on sticks. Choose a pair of the grilled skewers, such as juicy chook thigh doused in teriyaki sauce, chicken meatballs with shavings of cured egg yolk, or soy-braised pork belly. Vegetarians are looked after in the stick section, too, with the likes of leek and garlic-thyme butter, and sweet potato with soy butter. Or leave it to the kitchen again and order the Sticks Set, a daily selection of four mixed skewers for $20.
Why we love itIt’s hard not to love Benchwarmer when it’s good for a beer and snacks at 3:00pm, a full meal with tasty drinks at dinnertime, or a nightcap before heading home.

Regular’s tipAsk about the daily special – the kitchen usually has a few one-off dishes going that aren’t on the regular menu. Benchwarmer also has specials three nights a week: no corkage and $10 Whisky Highballs on Wednesday, “hoppy hour” on select tap beers on Thursday, and cheap grilled skewers on Sunday.
Who to takeFrom families to friends, everyone’s seen at Benchwarmer. It’s an excellent spot for after-work drinks, an overdue catch-up with a group of mates over lots of small plates, or basking in the last afternoon rays with a drink on one of the outdoor tables before dinner.
