The Summer Smash cocktail

Smash together this vodka cocktail that’s fruity, floral and lots of fun.

About the cocktail

It’s all in the name, right? This is a refreshing summer cocktail smashed together using a bunch of fresh ingredients. The pink lemonade brings a real tartness to the drink, balanced by a touch of honey water and summer fruits for sweetness.

If you haven’t embraced the joys of a muddled drink before, this is a great introduction. It’s all about mooshing these ingredients together to meld their flavours and create a solid base for the drink. A muddler is the ideal tool, but if you don’t have one, the end of a wooden spoon will do the job well. Then it’s simply a case of topping it up with the mixers and ice, and you’re away.

Strawberry, mint, citrus and fizz make magic in the Summer Smash, while the vodka gives the drink a little bite without getting in the way of all those bright flavours. You’d be right in thinking this is absolutely the drink to serve up for friends in the backyard on a sunny afternoon.

  • 1 strawberry, quartered
  • 1 sprig of mint, stem removed
  • 1 lemon wedge

Method

  1. Combine the strawberry and mint in a large glass, squeeze the lemon and orange wedges before dropping them in, and muddle it all together
  2. Add some ice, the pink lemonade, honey water and vodka, and stir well
  3. Garnish with more mint, lemon and strawberry slices

Dan’s top tips

This recipe calls for honey water, which can vary in terms of ratios. Here, we’re working with two parts water to one part honey, so simply drop your honey into warm water and stir until dissolved. If you have a squeezy bottle on hand, use that and shake up the mix together. If you like things a little sweeter, feel free to go bigger on your honey – and vice versa if you want to pull back on the sweet factor.
