A non-alcoholic Passionfruit Mojito

Not drinking? No worries. Try this delicious non-alcoholic tropical refresher  – you won’t know the difference.

About the cocktail

Not all cocktails need alcohol. And no, we’re not talking about the grenadined, super-sweet mocktails made with pre-packaged fruit juice. We’re talking about non-alcoholic cocktails, the low ABV or no ABV counterpart to the real deal.

Some might say it’s even harder to get the balance right in non-alcoholic cocktails, but luckily for you, we’ve gone ahead and nailed these measurements in this Non-alcoholic Passionfruit Mojito.

Before we dive into specifics, let’s take a brief look at the history of Mojitos, the ultimate refresher cocktail. The Mojito was first created in the 16th century as a remedy for scurvy and cholera, but it fast became a popular recreational drink in Cuba. Its influence spread far and wide with celebrities like Ernest Hemingway indulging in the minty beverage. His thoughts on the tasty drink are famously immortalised on the walls of Cuban bar, La Bodeguita del Medio: “My Mojito in La Bodeguita, my Daiquiri in El Floridita.” Supposedly signed by Ernest himself.

The Mojito hasn’t exactly been the most popular cocktail in recent years, particularly among bartenders, but in actuality, this drink is super easy and refreshing – a light, fun pre-dinner, pre-lunch, middle of lunch, middle of dinner, whenever drink! Without the rum, the drink becomes much lighter and fresher and is a fabulous alternative to the traditional Mo’.

Dan’s top tips

Mastering the Mojito isn’t as hard as many make it out to be. It just requires good quality ingredients and great mint. The quality of mint and how you use it will make or break your drink. As we’ve said before, when making a Mojito it is important not to over-muddle your mint. Treat it gently and you’ll be rewarded with lovely aromatics and flavour. Too much force, and you’ll break the mint and be punished with floating chunks. We also suggest using medium-sized ice cubes, perfect for dilution and presentation.

We have plenty of other takes on the Mojio in our collection of expert-tested recipes. Be sure to try the Mango Mojito, Strawberry Mojito or the Lychee Soju Mojito – they can also be adapted to be non-alcoholic, just like this 0.5% Passionfruit version.
