The Lagerita cocktail mixes beer with a Margarita

What do you get when you cross a Margarita with beer? Read on.

About the cocktail

  • You walk into a bar (okay, this sounds like the start of a joke, but let’s go with it) and sidle up to the bartender, who throws you a welcoming “What’ll it be?”. Then boom! Mental blank. Cocktail? Beer? What do you feel like? Don’t worry, Dan’s is here to solve the dilemma: enter stage left, the Largerita (AKA the Beergarita).
  • This zesty, malty dude has ‘beach club’ written all over it; a masterful mash-up of brewski meets – you guessed it – Margarita. Born from the brilliant idea of blending a crisp cerveza with the citrusy kick of a tried-and-true cocktail favourite, the original recipe famously featured a Coronita flipped into a frozen Marg. Tangy and fizzy with a hint of light bitterness, this liquid hybrid is a sun-soaked fiesta of flavours.
  • Yeah, the frothy, zippy lovechild of a Mexican lager and a classic Marg may sound kinda wacky. But, in fact, it melds these two popular drinks together so seamlessly you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it first. The Marg provides that fruity tart punch we all know and love, and the crisp lager brightens the whole mix, elevated by the addition of sweetness from the agave syrup. Alexa, play ‘Pure Shores’.

Watch: How to make the Lagerita

Ingredients

  • 30mL reposado tequila
  • 30mL lime juice
  • 15mL agave syrup
  • ½ bottle of Mexican lager
  • Glass: highball, old fashioned or large rocks
  • Garnish: lime and sea salt for glass rim, plus lime wedge

Method

  1. Prepare your glass by running a lime wedge around the rim and dipping it in salt to coat. Set it aside.
  2. Add all ingredients, except the beer, into a cocktail shaker with ice
  3. Shake briefly until the outside of the tin is frosty
  4. Strain into your prepared glass over fresh ice
  5. Top with the Mexican lager
  6. Garnish with a lime wedge

Dan’s top tips

  • Tart, refreshing and a little sweet ’n salty, the Lagarita – like the Marg itself – is super easy to riff on. Once you’ve tried our base recipe, feel free to put your flavour stamp on it.
  • Spice up your life with a dash of Tabasco sauce or some fresh jalapeño slices to bring the heat, or swap out the agave syrup for an orange liqueur for a sweet, extra citrusy hit. Partial to roasted, smoky notes? Sub the tequila for mezcal for an earthy Mezcalita vibe.
  • In case you’re wondering if the choice of beer really matters, we have to say that Mexican lager is definitely the way to go – something light and refreshing like Corona or Sol, or a local equivalent like a crisp Balter Cerveza. Measurement-wise, the original is made with Coronitas (210mL of Corona), so one 355mL Corona between two is kinda perfect. Salud!
