The Duppy Conqueror

Punchy, tropical flavours are the star of the show in this rum-based delight.

About the cocktail

The Duppy Conqueror is a cocktail made with lime, sugar, bitters, and The Duppy Share Aged Caribbean Rum, which is a blend of premium rums from the Caribbean islands of Jamaica and Barbados. The fiery Jamaican rum with its tropical fruit flavours together with the smooth, warm buttery Barbados rum creates the perfect foundation for making delish cocktails like this Duppy Conqueror.

Wondering how this rum earned its name? It’s quite the tale — ‘Duppy’ is a word used in the Caribbean to describe spirits or ghosts, and, according to legend, the Duppy is rather fond of rum. So what is the Duppy Share? Well, when spirits – like rum or whisky – are aged in barrels, a small proportion of the spirit evaporates over time. In the whisky world, this is known as the angel’s share. And while the angels may get that share of whisky, apparently when it comes to premium rum, it is the Duppy that swoops in to help itself, and thus… The Duppy Share.

Dan’s top tips

We’ve used sugar syrup in our Duppy Conqueror, but you can create a delicious variation on this cocktail recipe by swapping the sugar syrup for agave syrup instead.

This may be a simple cocktail with just a few ingredients, but feel free to play around to see how you like your ratios best. You may prefer this drink with a touch more lemon juice to give more citrus zing, or maybe a little more sweetness is your thing. Likewise with the amount of bitters used to finish this cocktail, so be sure to make it your own.
