Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Varietal:  Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Current Vintage:  2010*
  • Size:  750mL

Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon is the beacon of quality that all Australian Cabernet Sauvignon is compared to. Coming off the iconic red soils of Coonawarra, Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon is classic elegance. Chief winemaker, Sue Hodder, is able to craft a wine brimming with aromas of blackcurrant and plum that combine with spicy minty notes. The palate is well structured, long and fine and is a confirmed cellar star being the 6th most cellared wine in Australia.

Intense fresh cassis/black plum/ dark chocolate aromas with savoury oak/herb garden/sage notes. Beautifully concentrated and stylish wine with deep set and sustained blackcurrant pastille, praline, mocha flavours, plentiful grainy, touch al-dente texture and minerally notes.

Black Label is an institution and the refinement of recent vintages are the dividends of drastic vineyard makeovers with chainsaws a decade ago. 2010 is the wine to drink while the tightly wound 2009 slowly uncoils in the cellar. This early and generous vintage has been carefully handled, presenting accurate and vibrant red- and blackcurrants, capsicum, cedar and tobacco. True to the season, there is a liberal swell of fruit in the mid-palate, which quickly pulls into a controlled finish. Well balanced dark chocolate oak forms a backdrop, while firm, fine tannins promise medium-term endurance.

Blackcurrant, strong menthol character, tobacco and pencil. Its firm and muscular with the graphite-like tannin thats typical of many from this vintage dominating the palate. Controlled and strict, but with ample fruit, its a long way away from the round ball of mid-palate fruit that so many Coonawarra Cabs show. Heres a serious wine that will need decades to unwind. Does have a lack of flesh on the mid-palate (as per CM) but I suspect its just buried under the all the scaffolding at present, waiting to be revealed. Difficult wine to rate in some respects. I could give it 91+ or 93+ reckon it will be good with time. Perhaps a classic.

Medium weight blackcurrant and earth with a spicy, cigar-boxy edge. Varietal, pure, clean and cellarable. Gum leaf lift to the nose. Tannin that builds as it breathes. Reasonable length but a hole in the mid palate. I m often one of the ra-ra boys for Wynns Black Label but this one didn t move me. No doubt it will still do well in the cellar over time.
