Wynns Michael Shiraz is a 'best-of-vintage' Shiraz from Wynns vineyard sites in Coonawarra and is named after David Wynn's youngest son. Made in the years that best show Coonawarra's unique terroir, this latest release displays the qualities that have made the 'Michael' one of the most highly regarded of all Australian Shiraz with aromas of red currants, cherries and raspberry that mesh every so well with the olive and white spice characters. The palate follows with an elegant structure bursting with dark brooding spice and succulent ripe tannins.

This is a dashingly refined and pristine Michael, a wine of resolute definition and substantial longevity, exemplifying Coonawarra shiraz of the highest order. Layers of complexity ripple with expressive blackberry and deep-set plum fruits, pristine black pepper, sizzling pan juices, roast game and a backdrop of milk chocolate oak. It uncoils to reveal a breathtaking expanse of lifted violet perfume and black plum fruit, riding on ultra-fine, textural tannins. For all of Michaels intensity, the classic 2009 season keeps him resolutely medium-bodied and relaxed.

Deep crimson. Intense blackberry/praline with beautiful mocha/malt/liquorice notes. Sweet concentrated wine packed with blackberry/praline/liquorice flavours, underlying mocha/malty oak and plentiful chocolaty tannins. Finishes chalky firm.

Clean, pure, elegant expression of Coonawarra shiraz. So clean and straight-laced I m tempted to call it clinical. Spice-shot plums/raspberries, cinnamon doughnuts, cedarwood, white pepper and more robust blackberry/boysenberry. Fine web of tannin gains assertiveness as it rests in the glass. It s not clumsy as it finishes but the tannin/fruit combination hasn t quite ironed itself out either. Will age long term.
