Illuminati Riparosso is a long term favourite here at Dan Murphy's. Always displaying intense red currant/red cherry/tobacco aromas along with ripe fruit and soft tannins that are the hallmarks of this amazing value red wine made from the Montepulciano grape.

Riparosso has offered consistent value for years and this '09 continues the pattern. From eastern central Italy it's an aromatic red wine with quite intense aromas of cherries and plums, liquorice, tar and earth. In the mouth it's medium-bodied with robust, spicy flavour, good length and a foundation of fine, sandy tannins.

It's a decent introduction to the world of Italian wine. It carries some sweet, blackberried fruit flavour, so there's something for 'new world' drinkers to hang onto. But then there are (more polarising) flavours of balsamic vinegar, tar, leather and cherry-flavoured medicine. It carries dry, earthen tannin and finishes savoury. It's a hard wine to rate - it's for quaffing, not contemplating - but it meets its objectives nicely.
