If you thought you couldn't afford truly great vintage champagne, this is your wine. I have waited in eager anticipation for seven months for Lanson 2002 to land in Australia, and oh the rejoicing when it hit my local Dan Murphy's last week! The most profound Lanson since 1996 carries a formidable tension between energetic vitality and sheer concentration. At an insane $60 at Dan's right now, this is the bargain buy of the year in big house vintage champagne.

Resembling a gorgeous Christmas Cracker, this Champagne is gold inside and out. Fine, toasty and aromatic, with a finish that is nigh-on endless.

A fantastic example of vintage Champagne. Though this has achieved power and complexity with age, it remains as fresh as a daisy. The acidity almost crackles with intensity.

Dan Murphy's Wine Panel

Just when I thought the greatest champagne vintage of my lifetime was all over, one of the best bargain vintage wines of all appeared in the Dan's catalogue at $75 this week. Be careful - there are plenty of lesser vintages on Dan's shelves at the moment, but 96 has the most power and structure of all.
