Chapel Hill Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Varietal:  Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Current Vintage:  2008*
  • Size:  750mL

Chapel Hill makes great value wines in the maritime climate of McLaren Vale. This Cabernet Sauvignon is a cracker and some say even slightly outshines it fancied brother, the Shiraz. Brilliant concentration of blackcurrant fruit with a lovely hint of French oak.

Chapel Hill has really got its act together in recent years and even from a tough year like 2009, they've produced a high quality cabernet sauvignon from The Vale. Credit to the team. A confession: the night I opened this I was in the mood for a hit of oak. For all the goody-two-shoes sentiments sometimes a slab of oak is in order. When I first opened this, it did not deliver that hit. I was so disappointed that I almost moved on and opened another bottle - except that my wife stopped me. No, she said, this wine is really good! I kept drinking and the longer I sat with it a) the more I had to agree with her and b) the more polished, cedary, smoky oak I started to see in the wine. Win-win. This oak though is beautifully integrated and gorgeously complementary to the dark, curranty, loamy fruit flavour. It has length, punch and structure too, though it's not excessively tannic or overdone. I wasn't sure what to rate it, but its quality is pretty darn high.
