Turkey Flat Mourvèdre

  • Varietal:  Mourvèdre
  • Current Vintage:  2008*
  • Size:  750mL

Turkey Flat can rightfully claim to have some of the oldest vines in the world, and Mourvèdre is one of the oldest planted varieties in the Barossa Valley. This 2008 vintage survived the Barossa heatwave brilliantly courtesy of the native thick canopy that Mourvèdre throws. A wine full of lifted violets and perfume and a palate of silky softness without any hint of confection. A delight.

&a highly perfumed bouquet leads into a palate with more drive and intensity than I can recollect from any previous vintage; no confection here, just silky power.

We have another winning mourvedre here. It's dark berried and earthen, leathery and polished. Spicy, cedary oak makes a delicious contribution and its grainy, assertive, rusty tannin is a highlight. Lovely length. Medium-bodied but almost porty in its ripeness. Beautiful wine to drink even now though it can be cellared with confidence too.

Usually blended with shiraz and/or grenache, mourvèdre can stand on its own, especially when it comes from the sunny vineyards of the Barossa. This example offers jammy blackberry and aromatic spice aromas of satisfying intensity and the middleweight palate is nicely sustained in flavour, well-balanced with a soft finish.
