Chapel Hill’s Michael Fragos loves using the Parson's Nose Shiraz to showcase McLaren Vale’s diversity and varietal character. The shallow soils over limestone in maritime influenced vineyards between McLaren Vale and Maslin Beach and also around Bowering Hill, provide explosive blueberries and liquorice with finesse and a wonderfully framing tannin structure. Up in the foothills of the Mount Lofty ranges, a Kangarilla vineyard offers Indian spice complexities that many higher priced wines would simply love to have. The added length and savoury tannins of this component and the use of some French oak result in a beguiling final release that is extraordinary.

Youd think that the 2011 vintage would have hit the affordable reds the most; this one has come through admirably. Theres no lack of enjoyment here. It tastes of peppers and blueberries, blackberries and cloves. Nice and spicy but not without good, sweet, kirsch-like fruit. Creamy/clovey oak throughout is attractive. Its a little streaky/thin through the finish and Id drink it young, but I cant imagine this generating too many complaints.

Wow this is a good wine for around $15 I thought on first taste. Now I didn't taste it blind, and I did taste it quickly, but I'm a big boy and the thought remains the same. Rich smooth dark fruit, light Asian spice and choc-vanilla with some savouries thrown in. It's fluid and lush, but not overbearing or lumpen, delivering the right amount of polished McLaren Shiraz to all the right places. Length is excellent as is the flow and balance - open grained chocolaty tannin and a faint saltiness fade away to close. Ripper value.

With its inky, dense purple colour, it s a wine that offers remarkable value. It is matured in 100% French oak ...

The name might suggest chicken but this is very definitely a steak wine. Again, there's not too much oak to get in between the wine and the meat, but there's plenty of flavour, a nice lick of tannin and it won't break the bank. Serve it with a piece of rare, juicy rump.

McLaren Vale is a happy hunting ground for characterful, easy-to-drink reds that won't break the bank. The Parson's Nose has plum and berry aromas with a touch of mocha richness on the nose, and a well-constructed palate that's smooth, persisitent and well-balanced.

Deep colour; the bouquet is full of black fruits, dark chocolate and an attractive, almost floral, perfume; the palate is dense and chewy with plenty of raw power and grip to conclude; a very serious offering for the price.

Deep colour; the bouquet proclaims its regional origins with a generous dollop of dark chocolate along with the black fruits; the palate is a generous replay of the same flavours, and has good overall balance and structure.
