Barwang Regional Range Shiraz

  • Varietal:  Shiraz
  • Current Vintage:  2009*
  • Size:  750mL

Barwang, value-for-money and consistency all go hand-in-hand. It's the hallmark of a winery that is producing some fantastic wines at great prices at the moment. Their Shiraz shows ripe blackberry fruit flavours that are supported by some savoury and spicy undertones. This is wine that continually over delivers for its price, the same can also be said of the entire Barwang range.

A little reduction on opening but then a lovely perfume with black cherry and attractive subtle oak, along with a little licorice given further air. Medium bodied and spicy, a finer boned style, with not a lot of depth but good flavour and a pleasing sense of lightness as compensation. Acidity in balance along with light grainy tannin. Some savoury tobacco flavour on the finish, slightly bitter, but good enough. Should develop a bit of further complexity and interest over the medium term.

Barwang was established in 1969, pioneering the cool-climate New South Wales region of Hilltops. Under the direction of the McWilliam's wine company quality is consistently good, and this young shiraz, made in the modern Australian style, is great value. Deeply coloured, it opens with aromas of crushed blackberries, sweet spices, a whisper of pepper and a lightly meaty undercurrant. Soft mixed-berry flavours saturate the medium-weight palate. A lovely balance of acidity and fine, integrated tannins give it truly mouth-watering appeal.
