Cloudy Bay has produced a Sauvignon Blanc of vibrant intensity. The characteristically uplifting aromas of ripe lime and grapefruit, nectarine, papaya and mango and floral notes of orange blossom, gooseberry and sweet fennel are striking. A small portion of barrel ferment and subtle use of solids in fermentation has resulted in a chalky and weighty texture balanced by a minerally-citrus acid backbone. The wine has elegant line and length; refined, fleshy yet focussed and refreshing.

The wine that launched a thousand boats. Tomato bush, lime, cream and a little pineapplethe usual suspectsthen into a full flavoured wine offering gooseberry and spice with crisp acidity though its core and a gently creamy texture. Finishes with a quinine-like bitterness, which is refreshing rather than off putting. The archetype of Marlborough Sauvignon.

It's always good fun having a taste of the legend ... or the one who started the rot, depending on your view. A lot of dedicated wine folks like to rubbish Cloudy Bay sauvignon blanc nowadays but I can't see why. If I call this wine 'inoffensive' it will sound like a back-handed compliment but I don't mean it that way. It's pure and grassy, floral and clear, and while it has gravelly, gooseberried flavours they are neither excessive nor under-done. It's an elegant wine. It doesn't taste at all cynical or commercialised. It finishes dry and it drinks easily/well. A very, very clean wine with subtle textural elements. Not too shabby at all.

The world's most recognisable Sauvignon Blanc by a country mile. Little wonder, it's downright fabulous.
